red seat belt button 900

I have a 940 and am wondering if there is a proper, gentle, way to pry off a red seat belt button (PRESS). I've broken two thinking I would swap them. Now I bought a fresh new one ($11.00) and wouldn't you know it - I put in on without the spring? So now I must remove it! Nooooo....

Use a thin, small, flathead screwdriver, and carefully pop one end of the cap--it comes right off...

Well, I had removed two springs in my efforts and working at night Murhpy's Law required that at least one would fall into the crevice beside the front seat so, for now, that is lost. However, I did get everything working:

I used a ratcheted 17 mm box wrench to back out the big bolt. The washers did not fall off. I cut the wires to the light (LED- hasn't worked for years) and am wondering if that power could be re-purposed for a USB charger(?) Then my buckle mechanism wasn't very springy due to years of spilled Coke to I ran hot water through it, then silicone spray. Then I replaced the spring (I guess it doesn't matter which side it goes on) and now all is well.

I am wondering if there is a way to open up a buckle - I tried but gave up.

Now I am wondering about that LED in the buckle and the wires that supply current. I'll check it but it that 12 volts coming in. If so that would burn out most LEDS! So, is there a resistor too? Maybe it is a little bulb, not an LED? Anyway, I am wondering how to calculate the maximum current that I can safely draw through those newly cut wires. Perhaps I'll insert a fuse and a USB charger there since I always need one more charging point.

I am thinking that if I know the gauge of the wire than with that information alone I can determine how much current I can draw. But I am not really sure.

Dear Horatio,

Hope you're well. I'd be surprised if a Light-emitting Diode (LED) were present in the seatbelt latch system. Production of 940s ended in 1998, before LEDs became common items in cars.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
