Fuel availability in tank is reduced.. new pump/pickup problem? 700 1992

1992 745 Rex/Regina 170K

I purchased this car in January and just recently licensed and started driving it.

Before putting it on the highway it ran out of gas in the driveway. The low level warning light had just come on at that time. I added 5 gallons and then drove to fill it up. The fillup only took 7.6 gallons (and the tank was topped off). So it would appear that there is only 12.6 gallons available.

I know the previous owner had replaced the original pump with an after market one. I forget just how the pickup in the tank is situated. I am thinking when he installed the tank that he somehow did not extend the pickup to a position that would allow it to pick up more of the gas that is actually in the tank. Does that sound like a reasonable scenario?

Have you had anytime work on this? Maybe the sock filter was left off or oriented incorrectly?? More of a guess here...

I think you'll have to open up tank to see what previous owner did, maybe electrical connections improperly connected. It's not that bad of a job since hoses should remove easier since repair is more recent.

I am not anxious to open it up. Too many other issues bidding for my time at this point. The car is going to replace my son's 240 and he is just going to have to keep the fuel above the 1/4 full level.

If you can picture an elephants head mounted by a taxidermist hanging on the wall. The trunk hanging stiffly, towards the floor(6 O'clock position). If you were to take the mounted head and rotate it 45 degrees(swiveling on a nail) and the trunk were to remain stiff, the trunk would then also pivot 45 degrees away from the floor(to the 9 O'clock position). You want the trunk close to the floor. It happens when tightening the outer plastic bung nut, if it starts to "bite" into the plastic of the sender...it will rotate the entire unit clockwise and lift the senders "trunk" up.

      Dashed hopes... 700 1992

This image of the tank opening of the car in question seems to verify that the unit is installed with the correct orientation when I compare it to the images shown in the FAQ's associated with pump/sending unit replacement. I guess that cancels my hopes of a quick and easy solution.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I had not thought about the assembly being oriented incorrectly but that makes a lot of sense after having it pointed out as a possibility. Also it is not that difficult to check as the unit does not have to come out of the trunk to check it.

Before pulling the sender check that it has been put in the tank the right way. There is a line on senders plastic part the should line up with the tank seam. Hard to explain someone might have a pic.

I think that's a real possibilty. Also, probably should check the guage is working correctly before starting a journey on checking the orientation of tank pump...

yeah It has to be restrained w a string ,,looped out the inlet .Then the pump is twisted when put in so that it can get over a bump inside the tank.then you let the string go & pull it,out,,,tht LETS IT GET TO THE BOTTOM

I think that's the older style sender. Newer style has moving parts self-contained, easier to pull in and out
