Moaning sound in 5th gear, bad transmission. 200

I have an 83 242 glt with a m46 transmission. When you shift to 5th gear there is a noticeable rumble feeling above 50mph / 2400 rpm or so. When you back off fully on the throttle there is a loud moaning sound. Initially I thought that it was exhaust sound but then you push the clutch in the noise goes away. is that the sound of a bad transmission?

you don't have a 5 speed transmission, you have a 4 speed with overdrive. when you push in the clutch whilst in OD you unload a whole bunch of driven components. 1st check your trans fluid level and top off, if needed according to the manual. it would be a good idea to drain a little fluid from the trans and check it for cleanliness, grit or a burnt smell. do the same with the differential. then check bearings and joints. hopefully you will find a problem that isn't the trans. in the meanwhile try driving without using the OD and see if the noise persists.

Thanks for your response. I am a bit behind the curve but I have read up and understand the M 46 4 speed with electric overdrive. The rumble and noise have been happening for sometime now. The clutch was also slipping and the rear seal on the overdrive was leaking so I pulled the transmission replaced the clutch disk, pressure plate, TO bearing, pilot bearing and rear overdrive seal. I drained all ATF, cleaned the filter in the transmission and put in fresh type T (non-dextron) ATF. Put everything back together. In the process I fixed an intermittent dropping of 5th gear. The center support bearing was replaced 3 months old. When I put the drive shaft back in I made sure that I aligned with marks I made prior to install and used all new bolts and nuts in reassembly. I will order a gasket for the differential, open clean and reassemble with new gear oil.

I am going to go for a drive on a smooth flat road and drive with only the first 4 gears. Maybe I can feel something in those gears that may lead me to some pronem other than 5th gear in the tranny.

      Thanks
