For The Upholsterers, You've Gotta Be Out There!

I have a leather seat in generally good condition but has a split along a seam. I picked up a sewing awl and have been practicing stitching and feel pretty good about using it. Now I'm trying to figure out the best way to begin stitching. So I'm reaching out to talk with anyone who has done upholstery work to point me in the right direction.

Goals by priority

1- Strong repair
2- Appearance

This is an effort to learn a new skill and be productive so I'll sacrifice appearance to get a quality repair. If it's not pretty when I'm done I'll throw a seat cover over it and be happy because my next effort will get me better results.

I've been treating the leather for weeks now to get them moist and supple again. The photos were taken early on in the process. Notice that the split is along side the stitched seam so this'll be tricky.

For The Upholsterers, You've Gotta Be Out There!

Oh, well, still have these pics in front of me after replying to your cross post on TB. The patch was from the junkyard.

May as well copy/paste the text too:

"Hey, I bought one of those as well!

But for the repair, I wound up using Mrs. B's old Kenmore. A cute young thing (best I can recall 10+ years ago) helped me find some machine needles at the Jo-Ann, along with some appropriate thread and interface fabric.

Had to include the pic showing the retainer for the buttons since it clearly shows a zip tie being used."
