Bodywork dimensions 444-544 1962

Had to replace both front fenders and now am hoping someone can advise the locations of the centers of the holes for the turn indicator lights: height above the ground and offset from the joint between the fender and the nose piece.

Many thanks,

Al

There are a few ways to go about this... as others have pointed out, location varied depending on production dates. Not sure whether there was a variance between the P210/445 and 544/444 models (the fenders are the same).

My Duett ('67 P210) originally came with the turn signal indicators *inboard* of the headlights. I looked at lots of pictures on the internet and decided I liked that look best. When I sourced new (used) fenders I had the holes modified to keep the location inboard. I think that's the best approach unless you're concerned about stock and correct appearance (rather than what might be a mild custom).

The most important thing is to make sure they match from side to side. I'd go for the headlight holes as the reference standard, definitely not height above ground.

    Cheers.

Well here goes an attempt to give you measurement..I apologized for the other mixed message curve ball..I was removing the trim from the Volvo and doing new fender for the 65 Dodge..they both black..the Dodge fender spear is extension of door trim so that clears up that..

the fender trim horizontal line will be established from the conjuction of the fender, center nose section. At this point use a flexible tape and pull across the top of the fender and mark at 18 1/8 inch...at the rear the measurement is take at the conjuction of the fender and the cowl..pulling a tale aross the top and mark at 7 3/8. Now pop a chalk line from the front mark through the rear and pop a line, contine this straight line a bit forward by reversing rear to front to ensure you have a straight edge. The most rear of the five holes is from the fender to cowl going to the rear holes is 9 1/2 inch, next hole @ 18 7/8 next at 28 1/8 next @ 37 1/2 and most forward hole 46 13/16.

YOUR measurements may vary just a tad from mine depending on flexable tape being used and a slight variance between my reference point and the exact area you marked from. tape your trim in place and verify you are content with the look prior to drilling the holes..

    Parking light holes...

from bottom of fender up to center is 5 3/4 inch
from the wheel opening on parallel to center of hole is 6 3/4 inch
from the grill edge of the fender to the center of the hole is 11 7/16 inch..

another quick look using a framing square across the top of the light bezel and along side the outside of the bezel and mark your opening center to be 3/16 inside of the right angle 11 inches inches down ( inside the square)

I think the position of the parking light varied depending on year. My 444 parking lights are further outboard on the front of the fender than 544 cars I've seen.

I could measure them for you when I get home later.

...height above the ground and offset from the joint between the fender and the nose piece.

I would suggest you use some other reference point for height (elevation)... every car is going to have a different ride height, so you would end up with varying final locations. Maybe distance below bottom of headlamp opening?

This won't help you very much and if anyone has one of these jigs knocking around I will be surprised. Volvo supplied wings have no holes as these changed position from early to late models. I expect someone can supply a lay over pattern for you.

In looking at the special tool setup, it appears to use a pair of horizontally level holes for positioning. If I were having someone measure the park lamp location (without the tool), I would use those two holes as reference points as well. Best measured methinks, with both the headlamp and parking lamp removed.

Did you do the repairs/replacement or was this farmed out. Reason I ask your old fender should provide all the location data you should need for proper cutting of holes in the new fender. Even be able to trace a template. If a shop did this, have you contacted them for possible access to the old metal?

I can help you a bit later with this unless someone chimes in with the measurements...I currently have the indicator removed from my panels. Will be a bit before I get back to the barn to measure though.

My old fenders were so bad, and mismatched, that I bought new ones. They come undrilled for the turn lights and the holes for the clips that carry the chrome trim strips. I can't trust the existing fenders because the holes are in different locations on each fender....

      Thanks for the help!

as for the fender trim strip (spear) you will want that to be the very extension of the door trim-cowl on forward for the fender for a clean look..use your existing body holes for this by placing you trim on the body using a two inch masking tape and outline the trim on to the tape..split the center..mark and drill your holes..the fender strip end holes are to have nutted clips..the one in between are snap clips affixed....I will try to get the lamp hole centers for you later.

You lost me... what you describe might work for the hood spear, but not for the fender, right?
