A buddy got me a few of these last Christmas. They work great for this purpose. Product is by Pig and called "Form a Funnel".

Art -- I got a set of two; one smaller, one larger. Will need to look up the model numbers. The smaller of the two is the one I usually choose for oil changes, although either one works.

They are also great for draining coolant from the lower rad hoses without making a mess.

They can also be formed into protective covers when spraying off the engine bay, etc.

Much much easier than that just change it before the car has been started for the day. Barely any oil comes out of the block and the fliter has drained down. This method has worked flawlessy for over 35 yrs of redblock oil changes. Blah blah blah the engine has to be warm is a load of crap as all the oil is in the pan where you want it be.

What kind of filters have you been using for 35 years? Are you an automotive repair professional, or are you speaking of changing the oil in your own ride?

My daughters usually use my garage at oil change time. I've "helped" on a few oil changes following a kid's wayward visit to Jiffy Lube, and sure enough, the oil light stays on a second after starting, and the filter has very little in it to make a mess. But getting them to arrive with the grandchildren the night before is a great idea. No one likes having to take a rag to the motor mount and crossmember.

Professional? No but volvos are all Ive ever owned. Mann filters exclusively. Doesnt have to be 1st thing in the morning just before the car has been started for the day. I also put about 1/3 quart in the new filter before I install it.

I'll pass that suggestion along. Of the oil change ritual, about the only thing they like less than cleaning up around the filter is checking the flame trap, especially when they know it will be clean anyway.

Its been a great method I will put a rag under the filter close to the block to catch t he little bit that does come out. I can get under the car without putting it up so to speak as well so it works for me. 3k between changes and never a problem with dirty flame traps and or clogged breather boxes.

I made a "funnel" out of the top of a 2L plastic bottle. The bottom of the bottle is cut off at an angle up the side. It then fits right under the filter with room to twist off the filter. Then, the top still has the cap. Once the oil is drained, I have all the drained oil in the upside down bottle. I can then empty the upside down bottle by removing the cap with no messes. Works for me.

That sounds like a good way to catch the oil while being on the cheaper side of those metal/rubber troughs.

I think I ran into the metal they make those out. It was a jewelry box made out of a very bendable material that acted like and looked like lead.

I want to say it was antimony but I did not research it. I believe it was the material of choice to make the older toothpaste tubes out of.
No idea where you can buy a sheet of that but it must have been cheap then!

Plastic costs and the FDA probably put the end to that. Maybe that's why it's coated on the outside with nitrile now!

Gun hobbyists/snipers added it to their casting lead used in making their bullets. I think it helped put a touch of toughness in it so it left less residue in the barrel and slipped better down the rifling grooves.

I will try you bottle trick sometime.
