It is not the ring gear. It's either the solenoid sticking or the mechanical linkage that the solenoid pushes/pulls on is hanging up. Don't recall if starter is a Bosch unit, but rebuilds are dicey unless you know the shop. You can remove and disassemble solenoid/linkage and make sure is works as intended. Bench test or bring to an automotive electrical shop (not Autozone) to have tested/repaired. Good luck.
