Please join me in mourning the loss of Frau Bleukar, my 89 245 with 317K. Bought new and kept going through the help of numerous members of this board, she was murdered yesterday by a 16 year old in a Nissan. Apparently, there is no concept of the coefficient of friction in the boy's head.
Its a bit early to think of a replacement, but another 240 would be interesting. I still have my 940 and brothers 242 to keep going in the meantime.

Working through the insurance stuff, and am getting close to having to make a decision as to whether to keep and part her, or let her go whole.
A couple folks have inquired. Question is, what are you interested in or need?
Please let me know.

My son is looking for a redblock to rebuild in his automotive class at CCBC in Catonsville, we live up in Carroll County, a trip across the bridge would be a nice Saturday drive.
He has a 1992 240 now with 240k + miles on it.

I responded to ZIMM in another of his threads
http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1587810/220/240/260/280/parts_needs.html
(CeeBee1 is my new registered handle as somehow CB was "taken" even though it is (was) me before some computer glitch)
but that trivia aside...Zimm din't respond
If he does...want to share a ride across the bridge,,, I want trim, seat, not an engine.
Waiting on the Zimm

'89 and later 240s were built to last. There may not even be any rust on the underside. Has a body shop seen it?
The door is wasted. But it may just be the rocker panel that needs replacing. The main frame that carries the transmission may be intact.
240s are becoming rare. 240 wagons ever rarer. If she is a write-off, seriously consider "organ donation".

I drove it home from the scene of the attack and the wheel was cocked about 1/8 turn to the right. Have not tried it at any speed.
A body shop has not seen it, and I have not had an opportunity to crawl underneath. Possibly this weekend. My quick observations are that both doors are toast, along with the B pillar and sill. The amount of deflection is such that the seat is moved and the phone on my left hip was broken. Not sure what the floor looks like, but I am betting it is bent.
I'm damn grateful to have walked away from this, and would hate to get hit there at any significant speed. Volvo's reputation for stout vehicles has proved true in this case.
As to organ donation; I am an advocate. First though, I have to go through the ritual screwing by the insurance company. I suspect that will not be amusing, and possibly may cause me to speak in tongues. The wreck gave me practice, so I am prepared.
The good Frau was the recipient of a couple organs from people on this board, and I will make every attempt to return the favor. This is with the proviso that she who must be obeyed has decreed that a cadaver is not welcome in the drive way long term, and I am out of shop space.
Updates to follow

What a shame. I'm glad you're well.
If you don't mind, what about parts?

Sorry for your loss. I had a similar hit on my 1990 740 about 6 years ago. I went to a junkyard and they sold me the front door with the b pillar and rocker panel attached, from a junked 740, for about $300. A body shop welded it to my car and painted it for $1000. I drove the car for another 100,000 before selling it to a buddy of mine. Of course my 740 only had 120k on it when it got hit, making it worthwhile. In any event good luck.

I really sorry your car was out there for the prob-bee driver to hit. I read that you feel you wanted to smack him up behind the back of his head too!
His insurance company is going to get off light on this one! So now that can you will feel like you gave him his first lesson, on your wallet. I wonder if his rates will go up to help fund you a newer Volvo?
We should be getting our insurance for free as we are not getting any rebate for providing such training services!
How old was the "his old mans" Nissan that he was barrelling down the road in anyway? Was it as old as yours? Bet not!
An 88 Nissan is beyond ancient in the junkyards considering their numbers that were made.
Shame that he could not have targeted and t-boned an aluminium all wheel drive Audi snowmobile (if you believe commercials) or the new $57K carbon fiber Corvette in any kind of weather!
I bet there are no repair shops for them yet! I wonder if that makes them a candidate fo being totaled too? So new, they are rarer than most old cars!
How much moo la will the insurance/dismantler conspirators make on those cars for their undamaged parts!
Losing that car must feel similar to the time I lost my first longtime held favorite ratchet wrench. I was quezzy in my stomach and mad as **** at myself for forgetting it.
In both cases, I wish we could have stayed home that day.
The difference between chaos and randomness is always getting more blurred to me anymore.
In your case, its another example!
I guess, I am in mourning for your loss and everybody does it in their own way!
Sorry....(;(

Ouch. That hurts. 16 year-olds are barely competent to drive on dry roads, who would let one tool around in the snow?
Sorry to hear it. I hope it will become an organ donor for the next one.

I once was a 16 year old learning to drive in conditions like that. Originally from MA I would go out on a snowy night and practice driving, stopping and skidding around town it was a great experience and I learned a lot about driving.
Sorry another 240 bites the dust they are getting hard to find.

^^^This is key. My mother used to make me "lose control" of the car in parking lots to learn how to correct. Dry, wet, rain, snow...it's all different. I agree that no 16 yo should be out in that stuff on their own.
But, it does indeed look like the old girl did her job and kept you safe. The rippling in the backdoor would lead me to believe that the frame is tweaked a bit and is thus a total loss.
Since you have the other cars to drive, you can take your time looking for your next 245.

It's sad, but the Volvo did it's job well.
Protected you from the impact and rolled for many miles.
Unfortunately, most of the 240's I see on Craigslist are run down.
Seems like the best value out there in Volvos now days are the S70 V70.

The problem I have with 240's for sale is not the lack of cars but the price. I looked at a few and they were sitting for 3 plus years and wanted $3000.00 and lots of obvious work, let alone the unseen. The price is always followed by , It's a Volvo they run forever. The place we rent shop space also has self storage and there was 240 that sat there for a few years. I asked the owner if he was interested in selling about 18 months ago and said he won't take less than 4k. He didn't pay his rent and the owner fell off the face of the earth. That car went to the crusher. What a shame. Matt

That is a shame indeed. Sorry for your loss. Should I be glad no one was hurt? That looks like quite an impact.
