Sport Exhaust - Eliminating the Front Muffler 200 1992

Hi all! I'm having some trouble with my exhaust system - namely the rear muffler. It needs to be replaced, and in looking for a part we could use I stumbled across this little gem: a sport exhaust kit from iPD (http://www.ipdusa.com/product.aspP_ID=5608&V_ID=11944&strPageHistory=basket). Now, it does eliminate the front muffler/resonator, and I was concerned about the drop in backpressure. I heard that reducing the backpressure can seriously damage the exhaust valves, and while I'm good with replacing the exhaust system I can't afford a new engine! xD

My question to you guys: Will this part drop backpressure enough to cause damage? iPD claims about a 5HP increase, so that's an added bonus - but I don't want to install it if I will run the risk of causing damage.

Thanks!

Yes, ye old brick may be an acquired taste...but it's one I acquired very quickly. ;D

FYI: The IPD cat back kit is stock Volvo turbo pipes except for one adapter pipe.
240 turbo pipes had one muffler.

I pieced together an exhaust with a Unitek header to a custom stainless adapter pipe (connecting header to cat, with O2 bung, cost of $70), Catco generic cat then stock turbo pipes to the end.

Yes, it is kinda loud. And yes, it does add some power.

Noisy in a wagon, IMO. In a sedan it's not too bad. Have run them before with no issues. Does add a little power. Will not hurt the car.

FWIW - Had the IPD sport exhaust for 3 1/2 years.

Pros: Will make the car sound sportier. Might add a little high end power. Easy to install.

Cons: A little noisier. This might bother some people, not me. Hey, a 240 isn't quiet to begin with...

Too true! Besides, the pipe going into the rear muffler has been shot for a while and I'm kinda liking the loud sound. xD

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Its a great setup have used it for yrs on both my 240 5 speed sedans. At this point I will never go back to the stock setup. No pipe banging on the axle anymore. Have muffler paste handy to seal or weld the joints as the clamps are not always strong enough to seal. Yes it is louder but not obnoxious at all. In a wagon might be a different story? Engine breathes easier and does have a little more spring in her step. Expected life of 4-5 yrs here in the NE, but thats as long as the aftermarket cats and header pipes last anyways

I thought that old myth had died long ago. Reducing back pressure will not hurt the exhaust valves. Exhaust gas extraction is a huge subject, and some velocity to the gases is needed to help scavenging, so some kind of pipe is always required. Too big is no good, too small is no good.
The ipd system will be fine, and if it makes a bit more power thats good too.

It will be louder than stock.
