radio installion questions 200 1989

Hi all,

How easy is it to change the car stereo on a 240? I currently have an aftermarket Sony unit installed. I had someone do it many years ago, so I don't know how it was done or how easy it was to do.Right now I have a Pioneer unit that came off my other car, and I want to put that in my '89 240. It has an aux. plug to allow connection to an mp3 player or smart phone. Besides, my Sony is acting a bit weird at times by shutting off randomly.

Also, any good recommendations for 4" speakers to replace the crappy factory ones? I don't want any bigger because I want a perfect fit with no mods or cutting. Ebay has some well-priced speakers, but I'm concerned about the depth of the speakers.

radio installion questions 200 1992

I replaced the radio in my '92 on my own...it took an afternoon to do, but since I'm an inexperienced high schooler I was sorting out bugs for weeks afterwards. One little trick I found - if your radio has a headlight dimming option, I just spliced a wire into the spade connector connecting the brown wire (which powers the dash lights) to the headlight switch on the left side of the dashboard. Boom - when the dash lights go on, the radio lights dim!

Anyways, the speakers I got are $50 on Crutchfield for a pair (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2064CS44/Kicker-40CS44.html). They sound as nice as 4-inch speakers will (aka no bass to speak of)...they'll even take a nice hard push (albeit with the bass turned WAYYYY down) if they need to! I did have to make a spacer (I chose to do it out of wood) probably about 1/8" thick so the grilles clear the weird little bump in the door in that area, but they're just little discs of wood.

I wish you good luck!

I ordered these speakers today http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PL42BL-180-Watt-Two-Way-Speakers/dp/B000230LBI/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1390457387&sr=1-2&keywords=4+inch+pyle+speakers

The depth is about 2" and I checked the front speakers on my 245 and looks like there is enough clearance.there is so m e sort of white plastic behinds the speaker. What is that for?

Here is the radio I want to install http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DEHP3700MP-MP3-WMA-Receiver/dp/B0007PZ8SC/ref=au_as_r?ie=UTF8&Make=Volvo%7C27&Model=245%7C132&Year=1989%7C1989&carId=002&n=1077068&newCar=1&s=car&vehicleType=automotive#

Apparently Amazon says it doesn't fit my vehicle :/

Those are nice looking speakers! The white plastic is as far as I know just kind of a water shield type thing...I really don't know. I'm pretty sure I took them out cuz they were getting in the way. xD

As for the radio: radios are sized with a standard referred to as DIN, and these cars will accommodate a single DIN radio (unless it changed drastically in 3 model years, which I highly doubt!) here's some more info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_7736)...I'm not sure how familiar you are with this stuff, so please don't feel offended if it seems I'm talking down on you! Just tryin' to help and I figure more info is better than less!

Anyways, single DIN is 2" x 7", and Amazon says that radio is 9" x 5". That may not be accurate, as Crutchfield says it'll fit my car. I trust Crutchfield a bit more than some notes on amazon, so I would check it yourself for your car (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130DEHP370/Pioneer-DEH-P3700MP.html?search=Pioneer+DEHP3700MP&osp=pioneer+deh-p3700mp&tp=5684).

Hope that helped! :)

Changing a stereo on the 240 is fairly straight-forward. Access to the stock amp requires fairly complete disassembly of the center console.

Crutchfield sells a 240 specific kit for in-dash mounting which is useful.

Not sure about speakers.

I don't think I have an amp and if I do I don't plan to mess with it. I'm more interested in what I need to take out to remove the old stereo. I know you have to remove the upper aux plate (I have the mini clock there) to access two screws. Do I need to remove the glove box?

Just replaced the stereo in my 91. The two screws are all you need to remove. The other side is held by a notch in the plastic.

I think someone had already bypassed my factory amp. I found a wiring diagram for my old stereo on the web to make sure I spliced the new connector on right.

Good luck,
Spencer
