Exhaust system replacement 200 1993

Good afternoon,

I've gone through this, in theory, before, but not in practice, and before I mount parts, thought I check with collective brains on the board.

In the past, with my 93's, when I've replaced downpipe and catalytic convertor, I've always used the spin flanges on both with the metal donut making the seal. I've just ordered and received a new downpipe and the parts guy (I'll not mention any names)convinced me to use the magnaflow cat which has a triangular shaped flat flange (their writeup indicates it fits 90-93, too). Although the holes line up on the flat flange of the cat and the spin flange of the downpipe, it just seems a little odd as I am accustomed to both spin flanges and the trumpet style pipe ends.

There was a substantial savings with the magnaflow cat (which is why I was so easily convinced) vs the EGR cat that has the spin flange (no my car doesn't have EGR) but that was the only cat they sold with the spin flange and trumpet pipe end.

Anyway, does anyone have a handle on this. Will these two mate up OK, w/o leaks of course,

    Marty,

I recently replaced my exhaust and went with a new spin-flange Starla header pipe and a spin-flange Walker cat. The deciding factor on the Walker cat was cheapness, like your Magnaflow.

The Walker cat did indeed have a spin flange, but the pipe was flattened at the end, as if it were meant to "swing both ways" as Art put it. I fought with it to accept the donut seal, but I never got it sealed up until I smeared furnace cement all over the joint.

I swore years back that I wouldn't mess around with the donut seal/spin flange system again. Guess I forgot how annoying it was last time.

Anyway, I think you will have as much luck sealing your cat-to-head pipe joint as I did; meaning that it will kinda seal, and you'll have to use muffler cement if you really want a quiet exhaust.

The real solution would be to find exhaust parts that aren't total trash, and I have not yet succeeded there. Or perhaps have an exhaust shop custom weld the system, which is what I plan to do next time around.

I hate exhaust work. Have fun!

I used the Magnaflow cat with a new flat header, it has been fine for several years now. When I bought it I was told it was not for the sin flange.

Marty is the cat flange flat with no bevel at all where the donut would mate?

Actually Art, I looked again and there is about 1/16" recess - all around - where the flange is welded to the cat pipe. Couldn't find a spare donut to see if it fits in there, but when I drop my header pipe, I will find out for sure.

No, that's not what I remember. I do have pix of that, where the flange has a flat surface and the end of the pipe is recessed by about that amount. No way that was made for the donut.

        From an advice column...
        Dear Walter,

I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor girl.

I am 32, my husband is 34, and the neighbor girl is 22. We have been married for ten years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted that they had been having an affair for the past six months. I told him to stop or I would leave him. He was let go from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him very much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum he has become increasingly distant. He won't go to counseling and I'm afraid I can't get through to him anymore. Can you please help?

        Sincerely,
        Sheila

        Dear Sheila:

A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber. I hope this helps.

        Walter

Flat as a pancake Art. I presume the the metal donut would seal? against it when cinched down with the three bolts.

The parts guy was adamant that it would fit!

I dunno Marty. At one time I got an aftermarket cat that seemed built to swing both ways: flat where the flat gasket seals, and beveled inside that for a donut. Because I can't find a picture, I can't swear to it. If memory serves, I used it with a flat-flanged head pipe. But memory is more reliable with the aid of a camera.

Guess you could try it depending on how desperate you are. At least doing the job the second time won't involve rust.
