1990 744 / 1995 945 parts swap & compatibility 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 GL that I am now using to commute to work in daily. My family also has a 1995 940 wagon with about 250,000 miles that is on it's last legs from my brother destroying it over the course of 4 years of college. I really wish the wagon was in better shape because the interior was very nice & it seems to ride better than the 740.

For about a day, I thought about switching the 740's engine & transmission over to the 940 to have one good, complete car. Would y'all even consider this, or should I just swap components over to the 740?

I am wondering which major components can be switched over to the 740 or which components you would switch over if you had the chance?

So far I've switched my steel wheels with the aries wheels from the wagon & switched out my non-working radio for the alpine stereo in the wagon. Can I switched A/C compressor & lines over to the 740, since my A/C is non-working & is still R12? Also could the cruise control be switched over from the wagon? How labor intensive would that be?

Any other major systems that could be switched over?

Thanks everybody,
Ben

Thanks for the info! I am kind of surprised that more will not switch over between the cars, but I can see why. I was just hoping the A/C would, since mine is still on R12. I'm hoping the compressor won't be shot after 5 years of not operating when it comes time to convert it over to R134a.

My 740 does not have ABS or the bosch system, and the 940 has both of those systems. So it looks like I'm out of luck there.

I'm not too concerned about brakes. I just put in new pads, rotors, and one caliper on the rear. As well as, new brake fluid and braided, stanless steel lines all around. That really improved my braking performance!

Does anyone know if the cruise control from the 940 will be able to be switched over to the 740?

Also, are there any differences between 740 sedan sway bars and 940 wagon sway bars? If the wagon sway bars could fit and were thicker, I would want to switch those over as well. Maybe they would be a slight, free improvement.

If not, I could always go with the ipd sway bars, but that is a good chunk of change.

    Thanks,
    Ben

I had a 1991 740 wagon that was still running well at 330K miles. Currently have 1993 and 1994 940 wagons. Although the 940 and 740 wagons look almost identical externally, there are lots of internal differences.

I think that 1995 940s have Bosch, not Regina engine management. That means different fuel pumps, ignition and ECUs.

940s have ABS brakes, if your 740 doesnt have ABS then all the 940 calipers and rotors are different.

If your 740 has been well maintained, the engine should be good for another 200K miles. The transmission can last that long too if the fluid is periodically changed and the trans oil cooler within the radiator doesnt leak. A leak can be diagnosed by periodically checking the trans fluid color on the dipstick and the engine coolant color in the coolant tank.

The motor will swap. It is a 'big rod' motor so that's good, but it does not have the oil squirters so it may be noisier when cold, but you already know that.

Most or all of the AC parts are not the same, including the compressor, the lines, the condensor.

The rear shocks will fit, the strut inserts will fit, but the struts themselves will not work unless they have the hole for the ABS pickup, and the correct reluctor wheel. The front brakes are different but May swap, with rotors and calipers, not sure. Front seats will swap, rears will not without a lot of work. If the cars are both Bosch systems then they are both lh2.4, with Some interchangability of sensors etc.
