My 84 242 driver side dome light switch is not getting 12 volts anybody have a wiring diagram so I can sort this little unimportant problem out... Passenger side works fine....Thanks in advance

does the two door have two overhead lights?

These are a bit involved to sort out from the maps because the drawings divide that switch into its two functions. One, the dome light function is just as Tom points out -- it grounds the lamp. If your lamp is simple (no delay relay a la GL) then look for the 12V at the lamp. Also your other switches won't work.

The other circuit is for the "left your keys in the ignition" reminder.

And I'm back at the quest for a functioning drivers side courtesy light... This is what I've done so far.. The drivers side door switch wiring is white with a black strip and that goes to the key, lights and door chime which works just fine (it was removed by the PO.. I found one at the JY and installed it)... The passenger side door switch works and there is power to green wire at the dome light.. So I suspect there is no ground coming from the driver side but where might the loss happen... My green book shows the correct wiring WH/SB (white Black) for the the the switch with a chime but shows SB (black) without a door chime... So where does the the ground SB (black) pick up for the dome light which three going to it two are tied together and one stand alone....

Hi Gary,

I may be missing a point here. Is the driver side dome light switch working and the passenger switch not? Or is it the other way around? I'd have to assume you are trying to make the courtesy light come on when your passenger opens the door. That's because the circuit arrives at the drivers door switch before being tapped to run to the passenger side.

Looks like that black wire runs across the dash, behind the glove box, and as I recall is a wire with very thick black insulation for what it does. If open, I would suspect someone has molested it in some past repair job, like a blower motor perhaps. Do I understand the quest correctly?

Edit: My '85 version of the WDM shows a slightly different wiring pattern using a blue/black wire to reach from passenger side and tap into the driver side wiring. Do you know whether you have the delay option?

The drivers side does not work but the the door open reminder does white and black/white wire on switch... Passenger does work but it only has one black wire leading from the switch.... It appears both black wires from dome light head to the passenger side A pillar..... I don't believe I have a delay on the dome light....I love a good Volvo electrical mystery.....

So are you saying if you pull the switch on the right side of your car (psg) the two black leads connected to the same terminal on the switch lead upward in the A pillar and not down toward the floor? The place I recall seeing that black wire was behind the panel where the idle controller would be on a k-jet (turbo) or the LH fuel computer on the NA 242. Down below. Can't say I wasn't looking at a 244 though, where the wire splits off toward the right rear door switch.

Totally out of control.

The switch on the (PSG) side only has one BLK wire attached to it .. The dome light actually has three BLK wires to are factory crimped together and one stands alone then of coarse the green (power) on the other side of the bulb.... Are you tired of shoveling snow yet...

Gary, I give up. None of my maps show what you are describing at the dome light. I have an '83 242. I'll take a look in the dome light tomorrow. Maybe someone was trying to save wire by the time the end of production for the 2-doors rolled around. That was '84, wasn't it? Yours have a sunroof?

We've shoveled only what we need to. By May it should all be gone.

No you can't give up I'm not and yes it is a 84 242 TIC with sunroof.... Is there a something in the reminder(chime) relay that tells (grounds) the dome light that the door is open just like the chime does...

OK, on the trail still. My '83 doesn't match my maps either. There are two of those thick black wires crimped on one spade at the courtesy lamp. Then there's another for the local switch ground. The two for the door switches seem to lead to each A pillar around the rear of the sunroof, and at least on the passenger side, it arrives at the door switch from above.

Still need to sort out what it looks like on the drivers side, but the news is, the 81 and 85 drawings do not fit my 83 242 TIC. I'm wondering if on yours, the thick black insulated wire from the dome light on the drivers side is broken inside right at the crimp. See if you can find it, arriving from above, and turn the light on by grounding it.

Well Art sometimes it's the small victories that are the sweetest..... Thank you for your input because it put me on the right path to solving the dome light issue. Here's how it went. After removing the doom light, all connections were solid the thicker black wire goes to the passenger door and like you said the thinner of the two goes to the drivers door, that helped because the green book does not show that route. I removed the panel by the fuse panel and traced some wires. The wht with blk stripe activates the door chime so that stays were it is on the plunger terminal, so what was missing was the ground BLK wire for the doom light which turned out to have been pulled through the access hole in the body and connected to some random connector.... PO must have issues with this before because I found extra door plungers in the glovebox.. I discounted the blk wire from the random connector grounded it and voila the dome light goes on... OH HAPPY DAYS...I fished that bky wire through the access hole in the body connected it to the plunger 2nd terminal and now I have a dome light that works when I open the drivers door....

Glad you found it. As soon as I pulled that switch I imagined what had happened with yours, minus the previous owner's input. Those wires are so tight one of the two black could easily pull itself back through the hole. Mine has the delay relay, so the black/white has multiple functions, but even if the delay relay is not working the dome light should still switch (without delay) through the solid black wires.

That's the exact setup on my dome light.. So I'll check the connection there.. Could you check the driver side door plunger switch and tell me if the wire there is black or white with a black stripe like mine ... What fun...I hope your in a warm garage..

On my car there are two wires leaving the switch. One goes to the key-in-the-ignition circuit and the other to the headliner light. Ground provided by the switch operates both.

Posting photos on this friendly forum is not why it is known to be friendly. You need to use basic html instead of the popular lite 'n' lookalike phpBB code you'll find on Turbobricks with the square brackets. Here's the green book page you attempted the link on. It describes only the courtesy lamp function use of the door switches. Those switched ground wires are all black.



I'm fairly sure I remember the courtesy lamp wiring being above the headliner and down the top of the A pillar only on the drivers side in one early 240 (83) I had stripped that far. Memory for me isn't my best tool; that's why I usually have a camera. Green book shows the wire routing from passenger side to driver side via the dash (wires going down the right side A pillar.) My 81 WDM shows completely different courtesy lighting used in a coupe. The two lamps NewMexico240 refers to. But this is a 262C not a 242.

I have that same book and also the 81 edition. It is (they are) nearly 1/2" thick printed in black and red and includes the foldout overall diagrams with part identification references Bentley published, but readable. Someone had a lot of patience scanning what they did of that book.

The switch provides a ground to the dome light.

K-jet.org has the Green Book on electrical schematics. You may have to use the '81 version but little will have changed in your car.
