245 Problem....Need help 200

So my 88 245 has progressively been getting worse. From starting hard...to now stalling randomly. The latest symptom was when I left the house the other day, I got in the car and started to drive away. I could mat the accelerator pedal but it would barely crawl. Engine wouldn't even get into high RPM. Almost like it was in a limp mode per-say. 5mph tops.

Limped it back home...shut it off and immediately started it again. It was fine. All the power was back and I noticed the buzz of the in tank pump again. My guess is that there is a dead spot on my fuel pump in the tank. I tried 2 different FP relays and I get the same results. Ill be coming to a stop at a light and the car will stall. Ill put it in park and restart it. If I don't feather the pedal it'll stall again. Start it a second time and its fine. Ill go on my way.

Does this sound like the in tank pump is starting to crap out?

Thoughts guys?

    Easiest diagnosis first .... 200

First, the easiest thing to check is whether it's the short hose in the fuel tank (between the transfer pump and the metal line) -- just put enough gas in your tank to be sure it's at least half full (which submerges the hose). If it cures the problem, then that hose is the cause.

Second, to test the transfer pump (the proper name for the in-tank pump), you can measure the amperage of the current through it. If it's bad, it won't have the correct current. Hook up a VOM to the connection to the pump at the relay.

Frankly, though, it sounds more like a problem nearer the engine (feathering the pedal generally doesn't help a problem farther back) such as your AMM, your throttle body, or even your plugs and their wires.

I don't suspect the in-tank pump exactly from those symptoms though it could also be bad.

There could well be a hole in the short fuel hoses in the in-tank sending unit. This would cut some flow to the main pump. With a bad in-tank you'll noticeably hear the main pump complain. I say it goes MMMWWAARRRWWWWRRMMMMMMWWAARRRR. :)

I'd go after ignition components first. This literally happened to me this week with my wife's 90 745T. The spark plugs were shot. The wires were iffy and had a couple of abraded spots. And the dist cap and rotor showed a bit of oil intrusion and the rotor had burning on the tip.

The end result was that the car would barely start and move into the driveway on a wet day. New plugs got it running almost normally again, and a new cap and rotor helped the rest of the way.

    Good luck,
