Rex Regina Ignition fault code 1-4-3 900

Hi Folks,

This code came up after checking for a sudden loss of power and dashboard going dead (with the headlamps on) and car going limp. . . .
2 minutes later the car started right back up and dash lites back on- everything ok-?

The actual code is for the "Knock sensor signal faulty or absent".

Question here is whether the two are related or just coincidental?

Not really my car anymore (yes it is )but my girlfriend had this and her mechanic didn't know how to check the red light bulb flashes for code faults.

Speaking of which, my car has an extra plastic diagnostic brain box from normal(?):
Any help appreciated

So...let me get this right.

You're driving along with the head lights on and suddenly every thing goes dark and the engine dies at the same time......correct?
Even the dash lights go dark too at the same instant?

If so, that points to a total loss of power from the battery positive post to the (12V) terminal block that is located under the hood.
This junction block feeds 12V power out to several different components.

I would suggest that you inspect and clean the battery (+) cable connection.
Look for a red wire from the battery (+) that goes to a terminal block.
This terminal block will have about 5 other red wires attached to it.
Clean and tighten the connections.

I'm not sure where the junction block is located on your car, but look on the passenger side near the battery.

Also, clean and tighten the ground connection at the battery negative terminal and also where the ground wire attaches to the engine.

Hope this helps
steve

Thanks guys-
I wasn't actually driving it at the time but have tried to faithfully describe what was told to me by hers truly. .

As this was my own car before betrothing it on her, I read the red flashes from OBD-1 unit and came up with a bad 'Knock Sensor', which is on order- as the code was already there for who knows how long?

Thanks- yes the ground strap issue can be a problem after so many years and miles-229,000 and counting. . .

will take a closer look.

Sometimes a code can be set some time ago - unless the code makes sense concerning the problem at hand, many folks reset the code and watch to see if it comes back.

By chance, did the car die when you put on the high beams? That is in the FAQ - bad grounds in the left front fender. It happened to me.

There are several grounds in the engine compartment that should be checked and cleaned, including a strap on the rocker cover and one below the engine I think. I found one on the tower that holds the anti-lock brakes.

Have you tried to find your problem in the FAQ?

You might also wiggle the ignition key around to see if that causes any issues.

Sometimes a trip to a dealer can save a lot of grief. Right now, my dealer is offering up to one hour of troubleshooting and a written report and estimate of repairs for free! I'll bet that other dealers are offering the same (subsidized by Volvo?).
