240 horn swap gone bad 200 1983

The horn on my 1983 243 GLT was seriously wimpy sounding so I replaced them with a pair of horns of a late 90's v70 wagon. The result is very disappointing. The sound quality is very poor. Is there more I need to do other than swap in the horns.

Thanks

I don't know what a 243 GLT is, but no early '80s Volvo should have a wimpy horn. They were pretty awesome. I suspect that the contacts in the horn pad switch are corroded, causing voltage to the horn to be very low. If it were me, I would add a relay and use the steering wheel pad to ground it, sending full battery voltage to the horn via the relay.

More accurately, the dirty contacts under the steering wheel horn pad would limit current through the horn (because I re-read my comments obsessively and notice things that could have been more clear), but the effect would be the same - weak horn. And if you installed a new horn and it is still weak, that's where I would look.

Found the problem. I attached the horn not using the small metal straps that they were originally attached with. The horns did not like being fastened to tightly. I reattached them with the straps and now the horn sounds loudly. I think that I will do as some of you have suggested and use a relay triggered off the horn button that will allow me to run full battery voltage through the horns.

        Thanks All
