Strange Power Loss 900 1992

1992 945NA, w Regina, 200k, great running and well maintained Volvo.
While moving in traffic, after about five minutes of restarting car in the middle of the day, at about 25mph, the car experienced no throttle response for about five seconds: the engine did not stall, was at idle, no warning lights came on, just no response from the gas pedal as I tried to accelerate--the car just coasted for the mentioned five seconds, then it "caught" and proceeded as if nothing had happened. This happened a few days ago and has not repeated even though I expect something is amiss, but what? Never had this happen in any car before... Thoughts?

In addition to some of the other suggestions, have a look at your air hose from the air filter to the throttle body.

If this is very soft, kinked, or shows any signs of deterioration, try replacing it. (Good used or Volvo new.) What happens once in a while, and it was common in some years of the 740 when I worked at a dealership, is that under high flow conditions (ie. open throttle) the hose gets sucked in on itself and can choke off airflow.

It can be a tough one to diagnose because every time you go look at it, it's fine.

It's something to consider anyway. Good luck!

Just went thru this with my 945 Regina. Check the main fuel pump relay for broken/cracked solder joints (this was it on my car), also check the radio suppression relay (RSR) on the pass side near the battery. Both relays must work for you car to continue to run. If both of these are good, I'd move to the CPS (crank position sensor), if it's old, it's suspect. These 2 are usually it. If they are good, then start checking fuel pressure, etc.

    Hello,

I would look on the TPS and FPR first. Does the TPS clicks when the throttle is pressed? Its the way the ECU to know when the throttle pedal is being depressed. Next is the FPR. No I don't think it is faulty. Have a look at the vacuum hose connecting to it. It may got loose with age & engine heat causing late engine response.

Also do check all vacuum hoses on engine for any looseness or age. This includes large hoses to the brake booster and idle valve too.

Just a thought. Hope this helps.

    Amarin.
