Hi all,
Well... I knew that my Swedish Baklava was far from stage zero but it's a little too early for this. My wife and I were on our way to shopping for my friend's grandson, my oil pressure light came on, I pulled over as soon as I saw the light. I find a tiny oil leak around the oil pressure sender area, it's definitely coming from it. Do I need to replace or is this something I can fix? There is more twist to this event. I left all my tools in Maryland. I only brought few tools like a set of screw drivers, 1/4" + 3/8" ratchet wrenches and sets of regular 12pt sockets... Heck, I am going to ride my bicycle to work tomorrow. Not all 100 miles but to my train station. :D
Q1. Do I need to replace it? Or fix it?
Q2. Do I need 6 pt deep socket to remove it? 12 pt deep socket ok?
Q3. Do I need PB blaster? Left it in MD...
Q4. What's the socket size? Sorry, I don't have a caliper or some sort to measuring tool to get accurate reading.
Q5. Do I need a swivel extension???
Q6. Maybe my oil separator is clogged? It did passed my breathalyzer test.
Thank you as always.

Hi all,
FYI, I took few minutes to break it apart. I am missing a tiny spring, it fell and it's too small to find it.
I think I can plug the top area with metal epoxy or high temp silicon sealant as quick fix if I ever get stuck in the middle of no where and can't get the part. See the picture below, break the top portion of the plastic and fill it with epoxy. Hope it will hold until you get home or get your part.
At one point, I was looking for a temporary bypass solution. I wasn't able to find a bolt size equal to my old sender in Autozone, PEP boys, Homedepot or HFT in Brooklyn, NY. 13mm diameter + 1.5mm in thread pitch.
Also, it's possible to remove the sender without a deep socket... Move the alternate belt, slide the alternate, don't stress any wiring and crack it with a large size adjustable wrench.
Hope this helps for someone or myself down the road. And please correct me if I am incorrect. :D

Hi all,
I was able to remove my old sender without any problem. I set up a good angle and crack it open slowly as jwalker mentioned. I needed a 7/8" deep socket??? I will let you guys know if my new sender has different size.
I cleaned my old sender, put it back and ran it for few minutes. No dummy light came on this time but I see oil leak where plastic meets the metal. I am getting a new sender tomorrow, one more day of bike to work. :D
Thank you everyone.

Hi all,
Finally got my oil pressure sender today, put it in with 7/8" deep socket. I drove for about half hour and there is no leak. I think I am good for now. Thank you.

oil leaked around the plastic housing.
Just thinking... If this ever happens again when I am on the road. I am thinking of driving/putting a steel rod or nail into the hole for temporary plug so that I can get back on the road. Comments?

Not sure what the issue is with the sender, removal looks like a deep socket 27mm with a 3 inch extension or so 1/2" drive. Carefully pull the wire from the sender first. Hopefully the sender just needs a snug.

Hi Pinetucky,
That helps, it was too hot and too narrow to figure the right size. Thank you!

That's for a 1991 240, I maybe the same for yours.

Hi pinetucky,
I just checked, they use the same sender. I got a 3/8" ratchet, hope it's strong enough to crack it open without stripping. Thank you for making thing easier for me!
Hi Dave,
I had a good night sleep with your support! It was very cold riding bicycle in the morning, felt like winter. I have never seen my wife turns red like that, the color almost matches that warning light!

Good morning SB,
A 3/8" rachet should do it. Worked on mine. As I recall, it was np breaking it loose, just make sure you have a good angle and proper leverage. If you need it, a new sender is pretty cheap from FCP.

Hi Jim,
That's great to know! I just need to get a 27mm deep socket from HFT, they just open a new store in Brooklyn, NY. I ordered a new sender this morning.
My "grandpa" friend just offered me to sell his 96 850 136k miles. LOL
Thank you and Happy Friday.

Hi Bruce,
A 27mm metric socket is close to 1-1/16". That's almost 1/8" difference. I already have two 15/16" deep sockets in MD. I can't wait for the third one.
|
|
|
I have 3 spare pressure switches, all of which are 15/16".
I believe the 27mm should be 24mm for that switch.
That's my "other" wrench/socket that fits my spare OP switch collection.

If you can get the car down to me I'm sure I'll have whatever tools you need. If the switch is leaking from between the metal housing and the plastic center it'll have to be replaced. If it's leaking from the thread area it may just be a case of looseness. If it's the old type with 13/16 hex and pipe threads I have a socket made for the purpose and it's a common switch. Give me a call-will be mostly around the next few days. -- Dave

Hi Dave,
It just happened this evening and oil leak is very minor, we were able to find a spot to park. I don't want to take a chance to drive out there... Thank you for your kindness and offer!!! Going to bed, wake up at 4am and need to catch LIRR train at 5am! I need to figure it out, I will never leave my tool box again.
Thank you so much Dave!!!!
