A/C installation on a PV444 444-544 1957

I'm new to this forum and the Volvo car, having just purchasing it a couple of months ago. But after getting it to run and driving a little bit in the hot sun, I realized this car has no ventilation and needs cooling air. So I found the kits on "Speedway" for smaller cars and went to the electrical mech. Also found the articles on upgrading to 12 volts on "Swedishembassy"... My question is has any one put A/C in one of these cars before? or am I inventing the wheel? Thanks, Dick....

After reading and evaluating the responses, I think what I will do is upgrade to a 12 volt system and add 1-2 cigar lighters to the dash. Then I can use an inverter and mount 1-2 house type fans under the dash, to blow "cool?" air on me as I cruise.. Most guys suggest installing a V-6 with the air on it.... But then I loose the economy and the ability to do the repairs myself... I have all winter to decide now that its cooled off.. Dick....

If your car doesn't have the opening rear side windows, consider finding a set to fit. They go a long way in getting hot air out of your car. Rear view mirrors? If you have them on the door, make sure they are fitted to allow the quarter light widows to open fully in reverse. These two factors will really blast a flow of air through the car at anything over about 20mph. OK you'll be bring in air at outside ambient but that'll happen regardless of the fan set-up you use. What colour is the car. White is good!

If you are going to just add fans, why not just put in a 12 volt blower with added vent lines rather than inverters and house fans?

I think you are really looking for trouble with this idea. First, the B16 is underpowered for this type of HP grabbing accessory, then there is the matter of keeping the engine cool. The radiator in the B16 is marginal at best and in city traffic it would overheat instantly with the two blade fan. Even with the B18 the radiator is a weak spot needing to be either replaced with a larger and more highly efficient one - normally with an auxillary electric fan and a shroud.

Unless you want to radically modify the engine compartment, hood release location, and consider putting A/C components in the trunk, this is not something to be undertaken by the Volvo purist - or a less than "wealthy" man (or woman).

I agree with Phil. The motor's "power" (or lack thereof) and the cooling capacity of those radiators just aren't up to this task.

Not to mention the fact that there are no real "vents" in a 444 as such, just a tube that directs hot air up under the dash to dispersal.

Just to keep "Heaping it on", unless you convert to 12 volts and upgrade to an alternator, there is no way to get enough amps to run everything at once - Headlights would be like 40 watt bulbs.

    Hello,

    Do a search for 544 a/c
It gives a name and email address for a guy in NY that makes the compressor bracket and idler bracket and tensioner. You will still need a double crank pulley which may hold up the project. They can be had for the B18 and B20 engines but the B16 would be rare if not non-existent.

Vintage Air is a good deal but they most likely do not have the brackets.

    Good luck.

AFAIK, no one ever made a commercially available A/C compressor brackets for a B16 engine. So you will probably have to 1 made. FYI, make sure the A/C parts aren't going to interfere with hood hinge arms.

There are double groove pulleys available, but they came with a Judson supercharger kit made for the B16. If necessary, there are shops that can fabricate a pulley.

If you are going to convert to 12 volts then all the rest of the pieces can be had from a place like Vintage Air.
