Both of the tail lights on my '75 164 have/had severely faded amber lenses for the turn signal. I say "had" because my 17 year old son backed into a parked truck and demolished the right side lens. Mine has volvo part number 1215708 for the right lens. It is held on by two bolts through the middle of the lens and has a metal strip across the center. Volvo has apparently discontinued the lens. I've seen a few in junk yards but all have the faded amber lens. Any ideas where to get a lens? Can the alternate 1975 tail light system (with different lenses held on by 4 screws in the corners) be installed on my car or are the body panels different?

I think I have a set of these in my four giant boxes of 1975 164e spares. I sold the car last year.

Four boxes of spares? My curiosity is piqued! I'd be interested in buying one or both taillight covers (and possibly other parts) if they are the right fit.

That 6 panel lens is going to be a bit tough to find.. Suppose you could probably get a 4 panel cover to work in a pinch, but it won't be right.

To expand your options, search for early 264 covers... up to probably '78... pretty sure they are the same.

It certainly has been hard to find. Thanks for the tip on expanding the search. I am wondering if it would be possible to replace the whole taillight assembly with the more common model. But I am not sure if it would mount on the car properly.

The 6 panel lamps were the same up to 1978 264, at least in this part of the world, and are also non existant for spares. In a desperate attempt to fix a broken lense, one of my friends replaced both sides with the 4 panel lens together with the housing, which were used in 1973, 74 144&164, and also used on early 1975 164. He had to patch up the two extra bulb holder holes on the rear panel. Nothing major, and it looks stock.

Check with VP-Auto Parts, they should carry the tail light lens for your car. See below;
