front caliper sticking and releasing 200 1987

My '87 245 had a hot front wheel when I got home from a 15 mile drive yesterday. I didn't have time to check it out until today and now the wheel spins normally.

Usually a stuck caliper stays stuck. I tried pressing the brake pedal once I had the wheel off, but the brakes released as normal, so I doubt that it is a swollen brake hose.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg

Hi Greg,

If you don't find any hydraulic reasons, check the rust hasn't built up in the caliper such that the pad backings bind in their ways.

If the caliper gets too hot and you boil your fluid ,
you WILL lose 100% of your brakes !!!!

Ask me how I know ?

Because this has happened to me TWICE on my 1993 240 . I replaced passenger front caliper about two years ago . Then just this past week my front drivers side apparently started dragging just enough to get the fluid to boiling without ever pulling and I completely lost the brakes.

The brake fluid in my car was replaced two years ago , so was good , didn't have water or anything it.

A new caliper at Autozone is just $ 39 and takes about 10 mins to put on .

If you have any doubts - replace it now .

If one front caliper were sticking while driving, I think you would feel a pull in the steering. Perhaps the heat is caused by something else. Wheel bearing?

if the fluid hasn't been changed in 2 yrs you should completely flush it now.If the brake hose hasn't been replaced ,,it may have collapsed inward & that prevents the fluid from draining back to the master,,,I have unstuck caiipers by flushing thoroughly
