How to tighten ebrakr on 960. 900

I am trying to tighten up my ebrake and on my 240 I could do it right behind the lever where an ashtray usually is but all I see behind my 960 ashtray is more plastic. Do I need to remove the entire center console?

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee

You do not need to remove the console. Remove the ash tray and you will see some little slots in the bottom where the ash tray was. Stick a small screwdriver in one of the slots, twist slightly and pull back. The little panel will come out and you will see the adjustment nut.

Per usual Spook got me flying straight again.

Those two screws are very well hidden. I have the usual detritus on the felt bottom of my console and I could barely see it. If you have to get to these on a 1996 960 look really, really closely and you will find the trapdoor like cover. Jimo, what year is your 960?
Mine is 1996. It sounds like the wizards at Volvo moved the location of these screws from behind the ashtray.

Thanks very much and a special thanks to Spook.

Jim,

I have a 96 960, 97 960, and a 98 V90 and all can be adjusted as I described. I have also had 92 960s which were the same

Remove the tab in center console and then the two screws, pull console up and reach in and turn nylon nut, should turn easy if there is slack. The rear brake shoes have an adjuster to take up the worn shoes, take the wheel off and insert screwdriver blade into large hole and turn the star adjuster until the pads just touch drum, then back off a bit.

Thanks Paulii but can you be more specific about the location of the tabs hiding the screws. I looked real carefully. Are they hidden INSIDE the center compartment? I am looking at it from the backseat and staring at the blank place where my ashtray was before I removed it.

I would send you a picture but I am having technical difficulties right now.
All it would be is a view of the center console from the rear. I have a feeling these two tabs and screws are somewhere aft of that.

Thanks very much,

Dear sasjzl,

Hope you're well. In the center console, there is a storage bin. In the floor of the storage bin, there's a rectangular panel. It should have a small slot, into which the tip of a small, flat-blade screwdriver can be inserted. Gently pry-up the panel. You should see two screws (T-20, if I recall correctly).

When those screws have been removed, the center console can be lifted enough to allow access to the wiring harness, that goes to the ashtray on the rear-facing side of the center console.

If you detach the connectors from the light above the ashtray, you should be able to lift the console enough to expose the emergency brake adjuster, which is black plastic, and has an hexagonal cross-section.

Turning the hexagonal adjuster removes slack from the emergency brake cable. I do not recall the direction, in which to go, to tighten (remove slack from) the emergency brake cable. I'm sure you'll figure out the correct direction pretty quickly.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
