Trouble running a B20, no throttle response 140-160

Hello all,

I have recently had the opportunity to pick up an old 140 that's been in dry storage for a number of years. The first thing I've tried to do is get the engine to fire (after putting on some SU HS6 carbs that I know are roughly tuned).

I don't trust anything that comes out of the fuel lines (I'll drain the old gas out eventually but now I just want it running), so I put some fresh gas in the float bowls and turned it over. It fired up but there's no throttle response, I mean literally nothing happens when I change the throttle position. The engine holds a low idle, just barely (approximately 600-800 RPM)., but will not rev higher.

I checked the timing by rotating the crank to 5 degrees BTDC, as it says in the manual, and the points are just starting to open on the number 1 cylinder, so I know the timing is at least roughly correct (and it was running when parked, the previous owner drove it to the storage. There's no real reason for the timing to change much with time).

Any ideas?

Maybe this is a long shot but if your manifold has the extra throttles in it below the carb flange and the carbs you've put on don't have the levers that open those extra throttles, then that might cause the trouble you're having.

+1 on mouse nest in exhaust....also if the car has an auto box maybe it is doing something strange like dragging the engine

If you do not find any carb issues - I vote for mouse nests in exhaust system - happened to me last spring, except Beetlebomb promptly spit them out.

Any increase in gasses going into the engine must also come out.

BTW - If you do have mice, buy traps made by Kness, they work great.

All things being equal you'd have to say that the butterfly spindles aren't being turned by the throttle mechanism. Maybe the spindle clamps weren't tightened after the carbs were fitted. We've all had these duuuuh moments........

      I have to agree...

Engine off, remove air filters if fitted, manually push up on the pistons so you can see the butterfly valves, have someone step on the gas from inside and see if the butterflies are opening.

Did you manually check that the pistons/needles are free to move? -- Dave

Yeah, the butterfly valves open with the throttle and the dashpot pistons are free to move. It's been bothering me because I can't find a good reason why it won't at last run rough.

If you have Stromberg carburetors, check the diaphragms that are under the upper cover by removing the damper rod and then the 4 screws to pull off the cover.
