544 rear axle mounting 444-544

While refurbushing the rear axle mounting of my '59 544 I found a series of flat washers(16 pcs) used as shims apparently to tighten up the rectangular mounting blocks. Are these required or was a previous owner/mechanic trying to beef it up? This seems a somewhat "Mickey Mouse" way to fix the real problem, worn bushings. In my case I do seem to need some additional shimming here, I am more inclined to make new shims using some steel bar stock to support the whole shape of the bushings rather than washers. Shim placement I think may be somewhat critical also as they may alter the pinion angle. Comments appreciated.
Thanks, Deloc

I assume you are talking about the 2 hex rods with threaded ends had the extra washers. The 2 rectangle bushings are 1 3/16 inch thick and my have worn and compressed. Replace with new bushings and you will not need the washers.

Yes , the hex rods. I have new bushings but the assembly is still a bit loose. As I mentioned I am going to make some steel shims same size as the bushings to take up the slop. This way the bushings will be compressed evenly.
      Thanks

I just replaced mine with new poly bushings. No washers and pretty tight.

Same here. Poly and some new Grade 8 washers, but nothing extra. It's pretty solid now. Those are the axle torque rods, you would want those bushings to be in good shape and properly assembled without adding extra shims or washers if you don't have to. I imagine you'll get a fair bit of noise from there if it's not put together correctly.
