544 Steering Wandering 444-544

Last year I had a real problem with the 544 wandering at highway speeds.Problem solved by changing the caster. I changed the caster to one turn positive, you must turn the eccentric nut one full turn or the camber will also change.
I had the wheel alignment done by a reputable mechanic who works on classic domestic and foreign cars. I complained of the car wandering and he told me he set it to the recomended specifications and could not fix the problem. I had experimented with air pressure and toe in and out and no change. Taked to Lester at Sweedish Car Specialists and said without a doubt positive caster. I'm so happy with the results and just would like to share the results.

When I got the car the suspension was original with worn radial tires and pull to the left, so no real experience driving other tires. I rebuilt the suspension with new parts including king pins. It is a pleasure to drive now,I wish I had made the caster ajustment 4000 miles ago.

A time-related reason why the originally specified caster is now too little is a result of changes in tire configuration over the years since PVs were designed and sold with narrow, high-profile bias-ply tires.

Part of the self-centering steering effect of caster comes from the deformation characteristics of the tire carcass and tread, where the effective center of tire contact with the road moves rearward as the car rolls. The rest of the total camber effect comes from the actual suspension alignment.

Radial tires have less camber-like tire contact patch "trail" than did the same nominal size bias ply tires. Lower profile, wider radials have even less.

Thus more caster has to be provided in the suspension parts (ie, more lean-back of the kingpin toward the rear of the car) is needed to keep the rolling tire contact point trailing the kingpin centerline's intersection with the pavement to provide a happy behavior.

Thanks for offering your experience with adding positive camber. What size and type of tires are you using with this one-turn camber increase?

Correction: In my original reply on this thread I wrote "camber" in several places instead of caster, the correct word. I had not meant to refer to "camber" anywhere in my reply.

Having the steering box adjustment too tight can give similar problems, made worse if there isn't much oil In it. Better a bit slack than a bit tight. 1 1/2" to 2" slack at the wheel either side of centre is normal but to younger mechanics raised on rack and pinion this is very alien.
