Steel Cam Retaining Plate 120-130

I was taking an engine apart today, and I found a steel cam retaining plate instead of the brass one? No wear at all, plus the locking tab washer was there (something else I wasn't expecting).

I only found one mention in threads of a steel plate instead of brass. Anybody have any information on why Volvo used steel instead of brass? This was in a 65 122 2-door automatic.

Paul

I have a couple of those, likely to be a different supplier than Bosch.

Don't bother with locktabs, use Locktite instead.

I have a steel one in my engine (along with a steel gear set), but I can't recall where I got it. Brass is normal. But I have seen on multiple occasions where the brass plate gets worn, allowing the cam some fore/aft slack, and then it can make a clunking, clattery sound at idle.

The back side of a cam gear is a bearing surface, although some manufacturers don't seem to realize this. Some brand new cam gears are not as smooth as you'd think they should be there, that can put a lot of wear into a soft brass surface.

Do you think that the steel ones are better than brass, since they do not wear?

Paul, would you like to sell your steel one? I thought about machining some, but I don't know how hard I should make them.

        Hello,

Both steel and bronze thrust plates are still available new right from Volvo.

The steel timing gear sets we sell come with a steel thrust plate.

I think so. I haven't actually seen very many worn brass thrust plates, though, so it solves a problem that really barely exists in the first place.
