Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S Wagon. Did a search and could not find any advice on this. I hear a scraping sound from my rear passenger-side brake drum. I have IPD's very handy puller and I have had the wheel open in the past. I have replacement shoes but I have never figured out how to remove the old shoes. There seems to be some kind of hard button holding them in place. Any advice on how to remove the shoes? Any other tips I should know?

Yes, I know I will probably have to replace that drum if the shoe has been gouging it.

    Do you have a manual? Volvo Green is good, Haynes is good. Chilton is NO GOOD,
    Not sure what hard button you are mentioning. There is a spring-loaded pin sort of like
    a nail with a washer against the spring that you push in and turn 90° to get off.
    The parking brake lever is hinged onto one shoe by a pin that goes into the web of the shoe
    which may be peened on the end so you may have to drive it out.

      There is an inexpensive tool available to turn the spring loaded hold down the other guys are referring to.

      Sometimes it's a good idea to get a replacement hardware kit because 1 the old hardware may be just worn out and 2 having the new parts in hand helps to understand how the old parts are meant to come apart. Parts kits should not be expensive, nothing compared to the drum puller.

        A quite common cause of a scraping noise is when this anti rattle spring rusts through and parts of the set up drop down and jam against the brake shoe.

    If you are talking about the spring loaded hold-downs, just use a pliers, push in while holding the pin flush with the back side of the backing plate, and turn 90 degrees. There is also a circlip holding the e-brake lever pin in place. These and of course the springs, are the only fasteners that have to be removed to release the shoes. If you get the drum off, it's all down hill from there. Be sure to inspect the wheel cylinder carefully because in my experience, the shoes outlast the wheel cyl.

      Hello All:

      Many MANY thanks. I have the original Volvo shop manual so I am in good stead there. I do not have replacement hardware other than the new shoes themselves. Is that a Joe Lazenby-type request? Nothing like that on the IPD website that I can see. I think I stripped one of my adjusters so I need to buy from him anyway. Love that guy.

        Hello All:

        I just did the job. No, I was not referring to the spring-loaded turn-type pins. I meant the emergency brake arm pin that pushes into the shoe. My friend figured out that the pin was in fact not peened on but was simply a good interference fit. We got it off, all good. The car brakes like it never has before after completely dismantling the adjusters. Thanks for all of the advice.

        I do need a new adjuster. Looks like Joe Lazenby is getting yet another call tomorrow. This one will hold for now.
