Retrofit Manual Steering Gear Rack to Replace Failing TRW CAM Steering Racks? 200

I hate these power steering racks now that one leaks (1990 li'l red wee beastie Kombi P245), another has issues and I removed the belt (1992 244 GL), and dunno about the 1991 sedan (the Amzoil Type F fluid seems to really agree with it).

I like and prefer the durability of the manual gear steering racks we had on our Volvo 240/260 and 100s from the time of yore in the 1970s when everyone needed a perpetual shave.

I also like the feel of it.

So, has anyone taken the failing TRW/Cam gear power assist steering rack from a, say, later 240 and installed a manual rack from a 1970s Volvo? (You may want to rehab it with new greases and bellow and tie rods and hhhhwhhhhut knot.)

Please advise.

Please have a good day.

Please be sure to get an adequate amount of vitamin D daily, please.

cheers,

Fuzzy Spastard (Spastic Basturd).

I'm not too depressed. I installed new strut mounts and new made by Boge in Mexico Sachs Super Touring struts cartridge in my 1990 li'l red wee beastie Kombi P2455 today.

I did this to my 82 Turbo. I just went to picnpull and got the rack and needed parts from a early Volvo. works fine. don't forget to get the mounting hardware and the end links. Also the lower steering shaft, it's different. If you are in the SF bay area I have a rack, but not the extra pieces. I would sell it for what I paid at PNP.

the shaft diameter changed from 14mm to 19mm in 79, limiting your choices. the majority of manual racks i've seen are the 75-78 period. then, what to do with the ac compressor? good luck, chuck.

I may chuck the AC as well. It can get hot here, yet it is usually a dry heat, so, you need only crack the windows to get a good draft while 100°, so you'll get like frost bite or something, or the perspiring works better.

I've not had AC since, like, well over a decade or longer. The 1991 had AC, but I and my ham-handed klutzy hands bumped a line connected to the AC while futzing with something in like 2002 or so and the ozone hole got slightly larger.

Or I may wait for the day to do the coveted AC-134a conversion while replacing the HVAC blower fan motor you have to cut through all the sheet metal and have to pull the engine, transmission, and drive line to get to. May as well upgrade the stereo and install an iced tea brewing machine (so I can drink iced tea while driving as an affront to the motor laws in mighty, Mighty, MIGHTY Washington state). "DONT DRINK AND DRIVE." But it was a diet sprite!

(And then we learn of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation Site fiasco in SE WA-state, so Washington state is not too mighty with a radioactive disaster ongoing for 6+ decades.)

      Thank you,

While in drydock, Lt. Hikaro Sulu gazed upon the 1973 Volvo 164e, with M410 transmission and space hatch moon roof, making way for the space port, he declared in astonished exclamation, "They say she's got TransWarp Drive!"

"Aye," replied Capt. Montgomery Scott, "And she's a well built rear wheel drive Volvo 100 series, upgraded with a real Made in Sweden Volvo AB TransWarp Drive. She'll run rings around the Enterprise."

Actually, the compressor would not be the issue on the B230 accessory drive layout as the PS pump runs off the back pulley of the AC compressor.

As you mentioned, the relatively slow ratio manual rack from my '76 244 was not compatible with my '81 245.

If replacing like year with like year I believe the ball joints were different because the adjusted toe (?) to allow easier turn-in with the manual rack.

Now there is a "faster" (less turn lock-to-lock...something like 2.5) manual rack that was available but not sure if it was ever stock on any US showroom cars...maybe early GT's? I know it was on a race-prepped 242 I saw in a European museum because it was on the display placard. Neat car all the way around and I think it competed in Touring car race (whatever the predecessor for the DTM was called).

2.5 turns lock to lock? That'd be a blast to drive, yet an upper body work out!

        (?)

Some few years into production Volvo began using the asymmetrical ball joints in 240's with power steering to increase caster for better straight line stability at speed but the manual steering cars continued to use the symmetrical ball joints for easier steering at lower speed.

I do not think Volvo ever offered a close ratio manual rack and pinion for the 240. Can you imagine trying to parallel park with such as that? It's difficult enough with the standard ratio. There were aftermarket racks available. Quaife Engineering still offers a 2.5 rack and pinion. It's not a bolt up assembly, though. Just the rack and the pinion to replace the stock items in an existing unit.

The GT's came with power steering as standard equipment.

My 1979 242 GT had that power steering rack.

Are the power steering racks of yore (the 1970s) better than the TRW/CAM one we have in our 1988 or so + 240s?

I have two steering racks that are coming due. One got futzed up when I hit curb some year ago, so no belt on the ps pump.

The steering rack on the li'l red Kombi wagon 1990 P245 has a loose inner tie rod on one side. It started leaking last year on the right (US passenger side).

The other sedan has a one or more loose inner tie rod. That TRW/CAM gear rack does not leak.

I'm sort of afraid of the high pressure hydraulic line from failing in a most surprising and oil basting way.

I also like the feel of a manual steering gear rack better. However, probably need to replace the steering column U-joints as they work harder without the power steering boost. Probably need to check and lube the bearing races at the fire wall and where the steering rack secure at and under the front of the dash.

          Thank you.

Again, I'm sorry for bearing such a bastard over the last three years here. It would seem I have a job now for awhile.

          cheers,

          Manual Steering Gear
