I have the driveshaft out of our 1997 S90/960. I'm looking for the source of a rhythmic vibration and harmonic noise that show up especially out on the highway. A transmission shop said it could be u-joints. The u-joints feel smooth and good to me, but the rubber on the center bearing support is pretty cracked. Before disconnecting anything, I could easily push the driveshaft up at least a half inch at the center support while lying under the car. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as far as replacing the center carrier and bearing. Does it need to be pressed on and off at a shop? Are the aftermarket pieces any good, or should I go with genuine Volvo parts?

Here is some info I wrote when I replaced my center bearing on my 98 V90, however that did not fix my problem of the vibration, but changing the transmission rubber mount fixed my problem.
Not knowing exactly how to get to the old bearing I cut the metal around the rubber mount and the carefully cut the rubber too. I also damaged the two metal dust shields pressing off the bearing, and bought new ones. I first put the first new dust shield on the driveshaft and then I pressed the new bearing into the rubber mount with the dust shield and a piece of pipe with an inside diameter of about two inches I also used that pipe to press the bearing, which at this point is inside the rubber mount along with the dust shield, onto the driveshaft I have an old press that I bought years ago at Harbor Freight for about 100.00. The "v" blocks that came with my press just fit around the driveshaft and held it just below where there is a weld that goes all the way around the shaft.
I bought the bearing and support from eEuroparts, com and the new dust shields from Volvo. It was done about a year ago and no problems.

Thank you very much for the response. Was the vibration you had similar to the one I described? Was there any visible signs that the transmission mount was the problem? How did you determine that the culprit was the transmission mount? I'll give mine a good lookover, and maybe jack up the tranny a little bit and look for signs of wear and damage to the mount.
Thanks again for the help.

Dear DougC,
Hope you're well. The service life of rubber parts depends critically on how the rubber is compounded and processed, things that cannot be seen, when looking at the finished part.
Thus, for parts that are mission-critical (e.g., heater hoses) or hard-to-acess (trans mount, driveshaft bearing support) it is best to go with Volvo brand. As an example, the factory-supplied heater hoses have a service life of about 15 years (less, in an area with high ambient temperatures). Heater hoses are hard to inspect and not easy to access. Thus, the extra cost of the Volvo brand product buys a lower likelihood of: (a) coolant loss, overheating and a headgasket job and (b) having to replace the hoses, should one be so lucky as to get warning of failure (minor leak, rather than a hose rupture).
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook

I agree totally on your assessment of when to use genuine Volvo parts. I approach the parts maze the same way. This time, however, I went with a Bilstein rubber mount and an SKF bearing for a total of $60 from a local supplier. The list price for the Volvo mount alone is $192, but it can be bought at Tasca Volvo for $142. Then you have to add the cost of the bearing itself. You can get an aftermarket kit with both pieces for around $35 plus shipping if you are not picky about manufacturers. We'll see how these parts work out. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.
