1975 164 dies when put into drive 140-160 1975

Hello, I recently adjusted my valves. Thought I did it correctly. It starts fine, idles fine, but when I put it in gear, it will die. I did not have this problem before. There was a lot of rattling prior to adjusting the valves. It was quite loud. Now if purrs except when I put it in gear. When I get it going and drive it it is sweet at higher speeds. Everything is ok, until I let off the gas and brake to a stop or corner, it then idles down and makes me worried about it dying. My ideas on this are the injectors need replacing, vacuum leak, or maybe the valves were set incorrectly. I'd appreciate any and all ideas.

Question, which line is it to the fuel pressure regulator is the vacuum line, the top or the one from the bottom?

SOLVED. Thanks for all the ideas and assistance. I appreciate you guys taking the time to help me with my problems. I had to adjust the fuel pressure. Was low. As it turns out, I guess, adjusting the valves(hence more fuel going in) and replacing a non operative fuel injector resulted in a significant drop in fuel pressure. I should have thought of this sooner. Anyway, made the adjustment and runs good. Thanks again.

Why don't you start with something simple like setting the idle speed a little faster?
Does your car have the plastic H-shaped idle adjuster valve in the hoses connected
to the auxiliary air valve?
I refer you to GCP's excellent IPB at this link, page 11:
http://global.gcp.se/global/catalogues/nav47269?type=sc
On this page look at items 102-104 on the left side for thermal AAV and
items 142-144 directly across and down a bit for the electric AAV.
These are the two versions of the idle adjustment screw.
You unscrew it to make the idle faster and screw it in to make it slower.
Hope this helps.

George,

Yes. I can increase the idle while in park and have it at 1800 rpm now. However, as soon as I shift into drive or reverse, it drops down to 200-300 rpm. It barely runs.

Steve

Gee... Wonder if that is a tranny problem.
I've never had an automatic oldtimer so I am completely in the dark here.

Shot in the dark - Have you recently topped up the ATF in the transmission? Don't know if this is technically possible but if so could the converter be holding too much fluid. Level is checked when warm with the engine running at normal tickover revs. 1800 will be too high. Checking the level with the engine off will always show it to be low but shouldn't be topped up until checked as above.
