New temp gauge sensor installed; now gauge is near red 200 1984

I replaced my temperature gauge sensor with a new one and now the gauge's needle peaks at just below the red zone when the engine warms up. I forget which vendor I ordered it from but it looked exactly like the old one except that the probe that goes inside the engine block is maybe a millimeter or two longer than the old one.

I thought I replenished any coolant lost during the change. I didn't drain the entire block; just above where that sensor sits. I put in the new coolant through the overflow tank.

The old sensor worked fine, BTW. I guess the easiest fix is to put the old sensor back in and see what happens. Is there something else I should be looking for?

If the old sensor worked fine, then why did you get a new one?

Is there something else you should be looking for?..Yes, both my 85 244DLs have had strange issues with the temp gauges. As you probably know, many or most 84 and 85s had bad wire insulation and that is the cause of many mysterious electrical problems. After spending much time and effort,I bought and installed a new seperate VDO temp gauge, and rigged the sensor/sending unit into the radiator hose.My factory gauges still do weird things, but I'm glad I took the time to install the new gauges. There's nothing worse than not knowing your engine temp.

I ordered it by mistake. I meant to order a new temp sensor for the LH system but got the two mixed up. And since I got a new gauge sensor, I figured I would install it for the heck of it thinking that it wouldn't do any harm. Leave it to me to screw up something so elementary...

I'll put the old one back in to see what happens.

Mike, I think Bob (xray) just posted a week or so ago with the same symptoms. He put his old sender back and all was hunky-dory once again. Can't tell you what's going on, but it sounds like there's a trend.

I'll have to run the resistance tests for that sensor as outlined in the Green book to see if it's defective. Meanwhile, I need to find the old sensor and put it back in.

          Thanks for the heads-up, Art.

Dont feel bad,I did exactly the same thing.I ordered the wrong sensor, decided to replace the old temp sender "for the heck of it",and the gauge did weird things. Like I said, I finally gave up and installed a secondary gauge.

        Good luck and best wishes.

Guess you have answered your own question. Put the old one back in and if it works properly. Then either they sold you the wrong one or bad out of the box.
