Djet SU carbs swap 140-160

Hi Im considering swaping out the stock Djet for twin SU's in my 72 145E. I hear too many bad things about D-jet, I want to go the simple route for dependability & would be a cheaper option in the long run. A local volvo guy has most of the parts for the swap, except for a few of the smaller bits for linkage, choke & mechanical fuel pump. Im inviting opinions on the swap, any pitfalls i might run into etc... as im kinda a volvo newbie... what would a complete working D-Jet system (with "computer") be worth? would i be hurting the value of this nice car by doing the swap?

THX!
Tim

I've spent 45 years with SU carbs and about 20 with Djet.
I'll have to say that at this point, if the D-jet is anywhere near complete I would keep it.
Once you get it right, it seems to STAY right, totally ignores VERY cold weather
and rarely gives the problems associated with carbs (like worn throttle shafts, seeping or dripping float chambers, erratic mixtures, etc.
Also if it IS complete, the occasional maintenance parts are not expensive.
Injectors can usually be cleaned and calibrated for ~$15 each.
These include injector seals and hoses. MUST use injection quality hose though!

BTW in my younger days, I have converted a couple cars from D-jet to SUs.

Totally with George and others that advise keeping the D-jet. Especially if it's in good order currently. Keep eyes open for parts, such as computer, distributor, throttle switch, injectors, fuel pump. These parts can be had cheap if you keep your eyes open. It's when your stranded that you have to pay top dollar.

That said, I too have converted more than a few. Furthermore, there have been times that I've toted a complete conversion kit with me in the car, should I need to do the swap roadside. Only takes an hour or two.

If you must convert to carbs, and don't think I don't understand, keep the Djet around, should somebody down the road want to put it back. It's a good system.

I should clarify that I wasn't trying to "dis" the D-jet.
I would have stuck with mine if it didn't need so many parts. IRRC, at the time I needed a Manifold Pressure Sensor which was $200, Throttle Position Sensor ($130?), Air Temp Sensor ($?) and a new injector.

Purely an economic decision. Couldn't see spending that when I had a complete working SU HIF system sitting in a box on a shelf.

Well i find myself in the same situation as you, needing TPS, suspect Djet wiring, & now the "new" fuel pump just got noisy... I bought a vintage volvo for reliable simplicity. If i wanted to struggle with a complicated expensive to fix car crippled by modern BS, i would have bought a NEWER car. So ive made up my mind... It's simple carbs for the dependable volvo, dont mess with what works, always.

Djet parts for sale!

yep, absolutely understandable.

I tell you, I'd sure have been hesitant to drive 15k miles last summer in the ES if I hadn't been able to load up the spare tire well with all them parts and then some...

Never needed anything, but spare parts are a wonderful thing to have on hand.

SU all the way...most basic carb...pretty much bullet proof, parts still easily available, always starts.

I switched from FI to SU HIFs on my '72 144E many years ago and have never regretted it. Though that car is gone, it's engine lives on in the '70 145S.

I grew tired of chasing faults with the fuel injection components - not to mention the cost of same.
Though I am told that when the FI system is functioning properly, it works well.
But I too like the simplicity of SU carbs. And the HIFs run well year round.

Personally, I would encourage you to take the time to educate yourself on the workings of the D-jet. They aren't that complicated. As for the affect on the car's value, to some people it might not matter much, but given two identical cars except for D-jet vs carb conversion, I'd go for the unmolested D-jet. But this is all just my opinion.

If you need linkage, choke cables, or choke pull mechanism, let me know. I would be happy to do trade djet stuff for the carb stuff I have. Otherwise, good luck with your swap.

Hi Im gonna go with SU carbs... (my "new" fuel pump just got noisy so...) do you have a complete working SU set up (carbs included)? I can go with an aftermarket choke maybe. My car is running ok, but it has a undiagnosed hot starting problem that i suspect is Djet system related, or possibly fuel pump failing. We know the "computer" is good. The TPS is suspect also. we discovered TPS might be an easy fixable situation with very minor tinkering.
