91 740 heated seats 700 1991

I searched for previous threads with no luck. i have a 91 740 wagon with heated seats. the fuse is blown and when I replace it, it blows as soon as I turn the key. The position of the switch makes no difference and I unhooked the wiring harness under the seat (I think). Same result. Where should I look for a short?

I had a persistent (and at first inconsistent) dead-short on my taillights. This is what I did:

Before you even start on this, check the fuse socket to make sure it's not burned or damaged from overheating. Sometimes a burned out fuse socket will blow fuses.

First scrounge from a junkyard or buy a bunch (15-20) fuses
Pull out the fuse tray (remove the tray and space-holder or EQ) by undoing the plastic latches. There are instructions in the FAQ.

Disconnect one wire from the back of the fuse that's blowing. Insert a fuse and see if it blows. Repeat this until the fuse is staying intact. Then start reattaching all the wires except for the one that blew.
Then, instead of trying to find the actual fault, replace the wire from the fuse block to the final location.

Since this circuit is switched and runs through the seat heater, and there are a lot of components, you might want to do this procedure starting at the switch, and then moving to the fuse block if it blows with no wires attached to the "far" side of the switch (from the fuses). It's the same procedure, just try to start as far "downstream" from the fuse panel as possible.

    Cheers and Good Luck
    Will

Is there just one fuse for both seats? If so it could be the other seat? You can take the switch apart pretty easily. Clean the contacts and check for any short.

I think you should pull the switch and unplug the wires. The switch is a likely suspect.
