You might check the gear ratios. Might be different depending on rear end differences. You can probably find this information online in the Transmission section of the shop manuals for 544 and 140.

4th gear is always 1:1 ratio. The '74 box probably has a bit lower first gear than the original, but the others should at least be very close.

Is it pretty easy to adapt from the remote shifter is it a mater of just swapping top covers or is it more involved than that. Thanks

If you want the remote shifter, you'd have to cut the tunnel and rebuild it to be taller to accommodate the linkage.

And there's not as much space between the seats in a 544 as there is in a 140.

There might also be be a conflict with the handbrake handle (I don't remember if it's on the left of the driver, or between the seats on a 544, and I'm too lazy to go outside to look)

And yes, output flange will likely be different. I expect they are interchangeable since neither box has O/D, but I'm also not sure.

Thanks for all of the info guys I'm picking up the transmission tonight I'm only paying 30$ for it and supposedly it worked when pulled. If Its adaptable and it should be I will rebuild it and use I'm not out too much $ . Thanks again.

Your old top cover will swap directly onto the '74 box. All you need is a new gasket.

What may be a problem is that the output flange to the drive shaft is almost certainly different. I don't know one way or the other whether that will swap between the gearboxes.

Same box only thing differant is the remote shifter which you can adapt, or you stay with the long shifter, either will work

All you gotta do is change the transmission cover, then you keep your long wobble stick shifter.

You'll also have to use your 544 bell housing.

The '74 box should be a good bit tougher.

Internal parts (gears, etc) likely won't interchange. Hopefully the '74 box is in good condition. But you can't tell unless you either install it or take it apart completely, and the former option of just installing it is much easier.
