Okay, I ran the fuel pressure test and the results were 28psi at idle and 22psi at around 3500-4000 rpm. You can see the pictures for your self here:

    Ok,

    I wanted to let everyone know that I replaced the fuel pump with a an Airtex and it worked very nicely. Thanks for all your assistance.

    If the fuel system is D-jet, the pressure should remain constant regardless of throttle load.

    If you have the mechanical system, I don't know anything about them.

      It is a D-jet and it is an electronic fuel injection system. I do not know what the pressure should be for this vehicle. I hoped someone in this forum could let me know. I have idle and acceleration issues. The car will not go forward. Decided to do the fuel pressure test and it is 28psi at idle and 22 at 3500 rpm.

        Hello,

        28-32 psi is normal, but as stated earlier, it should not change, well at least not down to 22 psi.

        There are several things that can cause this like a clogged or collapsing in tank fuel filter, bad fuel pressure regulator and failing fuel pump.

          I am sort of certain it is not the in-tank fuel filter since while in park, I can easily rev the car over 4000 rpm without issue. If it was the filter, wouldn't it collapse even in park and give me fits? Questions: is there a way to check the in-tank filter, and how do I determine between the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel pump? I appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

            Hello,

            The easiest thing to check is the fuel pressure regulator.

            But the test involves replacing your suspect regulator with a new 1 or a known good used 1.

              I was able to adjust the psi to 31.3 or as close as I could get it...it could be 31.4 as far as I can tell. Anyway, it did help a bit with the idle and a wee bit on the acceleration, but the basically the problem remains.

              Since I was able to adjust the fuel pressure regulator, does it appear more likely the fuel pump is the culprit? I did check the contacts in the distributor and cleaned those.

                Steve,
                If you can lay hands on another fuel pump I think it would probably solve most of your
                problem. An AirTex pump is not exactly a bolt-in but it does put up enough pressure
                and the mounting can be cobbled up to work well. It'll be a lot cheaper than a new or
                even rebuilt Bosch pump. NAPA or equivalent stores have or can order them.

            Reving the engine while in neutral is not a very good test of the fuel system. If the engine isn't under an actual load it doesn't demand that much fuel. A better test is to connect up your pressure guage and tape it to your windshield so that you can monitor it under real driving conditions. Take the car out and throttle down real heavy up a grade. I bet you'll see the pressure drop WAY down. Since you were able to see a drop in pressure while while reving the car in neutral, my guess is that you have fuel system that is nearly completely clogged somewhere. Have you replaced the filter lately?

    Don't have a 164, but I'll ask what should the fuel pressure be? Does not seem like it should go down as engine speed increases to me. Mike
