ALTERNATIVE Alternator replacement 1972 145E 140-160

HI all I have 72 145E sometimes the alt seizes up on start up then unseizes on immediate restart, plus i get an alt light on start up that goes off when i give it a lil gas. SO im gonna change the alt. Im wondering if there is a better alternative replacement unit (GM 10si with minor mods? ...what mods exactly?)?

P.S. Any Volvo gurus / mechanics in central FL?

THX!

    ALTERNATIVE Alternator replacement 1972 145E 140-160

Many years ago I had a 72 144 that the original SEV alternator went bad. I went to a good foreign car parts house and he set me up with a Bosch alternator and a Chrysler regulator. The alternator bolted up perfectly to the original brackets - no mods required. As I recall the SEV was only about 35 amp and the Bosch was about 55. It worked like a charm.

      Hello,

Unless you need more than 100 amps, the stock type alternators and external voltage regulators are what we recommend.

We have a Bosch authorized rebuilder upgrade Bosch alternators to 100 amps for customers who have added stereos with amplifiers who need more than the 55 amp Bosch remanufactured alternators that we normally install.

We had the rebuilder custom build a 200+ amp alternator for a customer with multiple high output amplifiers in his car. We did however have to add a dual drive belt setup.

All the above mentioned alternators bolt directly to the block on late B18 and all B20 and B30 engines.

And the early B18 blocks can use these alternators with an easily available conversion bracket that sells for $35.00.

The alternative is to convert to a common Delco Remy(GM) alternator. You can fabricate your own mounting bracket or buy one from Ron Kwas and I believe he can supply you with installation and wiring instructions that include how to make the "AMP" light work correctly.

          Hello,

I have seen new 35 amp internally regulated alternators being offered by Skandix.

The Bosch remanufactured alternator by Bosch Corp is a 55 amp alternator and has a 24 month unlimited mileage warranty.

Check our website for a "current" price. :-) :-)

I expect this is probably the best option.

    http://sw-em.com/swemkitspix.htm#alternator upgrade kit

You can make a bracket yourself, or cut and drill the alternator and make it work, but not easy to get it all just right.

Don't know what you mean by alternator 'seizing', but, for the cost of a new or rebuilt Volvo (Bosch or Motorola), you should be able to get the bracket and a Delco. I'm a big fan of this upgrade.

Yes, this alt (not generator) actually stops turning after some start ups, belt starts to squeal & smoke. then i turn car off & restart without any problem (very strange). I assume there is a bearing problem, or something loose inside the alt. either way i want to replace it. The simple & common GM alt sounds like a good way to go for me. I wasnt aware there were generators on 72 volvos. THX!
