part number for air intake snow shield 900

I saw a 940 recently with the black snow shield over the cowl air intake grill. Anybody know the part number or part name so I can get it ordered? Is there a source other than Volvo parts for this?

thx
Doug

I put IPD's cowl cap version on my 940 a few years ago, but soon took it back off because it's notable reduction in the "ram" (fan off) air flow at normal road speed. The intake area is reduced by about 75/80 percent. Noticed the same (negative) effect on the 240 version.

More re effect of cowl cap - part number for air intake snow shield 900

This is very interesting experience because I have the cowl cap on my 740 and I'm trying to increase my hot air output inside the car.

Are you describing air flow inside the car was reduced with cowl? So I might gain a better heater if I removed cowl?

Thanks guys for responding. I would've assumed the cap captures more air instead of less, interesting how aerodynamics work!

Ram air scoops, turbo scoops: Any low air scoop past the leading edge of the hood are ornamental and will not help air intake, even hinders air intake unless it is sticking up a foot. There has been many like comments of reduced air flow with the snow/leaf guard.

"Are you describing air flow inside the car was reduced with cowl?"

Yes, but it was a subjective comparison to my recent 240, of what I'll call "ram air" with fan off. The 240 provided a nice fan-off air flow at anything above 35-40 mph as I recall. And the comparatively narrow frontal opening with cowl cover just looked restrictive to me.

I was OK in winter without the cowl covers, but (again subjectively) felt I was using the fan more than I had to with the 240. Not a big deal though. (Fan motor looks easier to change than on 240;-)

That's interesting Bruce; there are many who want them and I think David Samuels is making new ones for 2's. I'm going to put one on my 9 because it gets a lot of little leaves and twigs. I've fixed the little grillwork but I was thinking extra preventive. I'll see what happens now that I know it's something to look for.
I had a 2 that had that area filled with things that at the time I could not deal with, so no air flow for a while.

        Dear jerryc,

Hope you're well. As/when you remove the cowl to secure the metal mesh under the air intake grille, you can use butyl rubber strips to secure the mesh. I did this several years ago, and the mesh has not come loose.

I used butyl rubber tape, and pressed it into the recesses on the underside of grille bars, at about five bar intervals. I then positioned the grille, and pressed it into the butyl rubber, pushing some of the butyl over the griile's mesh. The butyl cannot be seen from above. Because butyl rubber is very sticky - and does not harden - I don't expect to have to re-do this work.

I'd guess a silicone caulk would serve the same purpose.

        Hope this helps.

Happy Holidays and a Good, Healthy New Year!!!

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

It is called a Snow Cap. Volvo part number is 3529534 for 740/940. I think they are no longer available. If you find more than one for sale, please reply here.

      Dear john sargent,

Hope you're well. Volvo Part #3529534 indeed is a "snow-cap", aka "protective casing". I found a picture of it in a catalogue of Volvo accessories, which I down-loaded years ago. This catalog is in Spanish, Italian, Swedish and Finnish. Hint: I can read Finnish, but do not understand a word of it.

The snow-cap fits over the cowl's air intake.

I also found this part listed in an on-line database, which suggests it can be ordered at a Volvo dealer. The MSRP is $85.00.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

Just heard back from local dealer. It is NOT available in the US. They show it in their parts catalog and attempted to order for me, but notification came back the next day saying it's nowhere to be found.
