My wife's 1993 944T died on her way home from work on Wednesday. She reported the car died and started a couple of times. Since I had a long meeting that night we had the car towed the ten miles home. Once home the car started and ran fine. I had thought that maybe the fuel pump was failing, but the car ran fine. While the car was idling in the driveway, I tugged on the RPM sensor cable, with about 1-2 ounces of force. The car died instantly. I replaced the RPM sensor and all is well. An examination of the cable showed the insulation on the red conductor had failed and the wire inside was making intermittent contact with the shield.

I would recommend replacing the RPM sensor cable when it is old enough to have the out jacket split as is shown in the first picture. I don't think they ever fail from a sensing standpoint, but the wire insulation fails from many years of vibration and heat.
