engine temp sensor failing? 700 1990

I have a situation where while driving my odometer starts to fluctuate wildly and the enging fells like it wants to quit. When I turn the car off and wait a second then restart she seems to reset and car is driveable again. Could this be the engine temp sensor?

    "my odometer starts to fluctuate wildly" really? Maybe the tachometer and or speedometer...instead of the odo?

    If it is the Tach, we are likely looking at one of a few ignition system issues but likely the crank position sensor, the power stage or the actual fuel system relay. I would bet on the CPS.

    If it is the Speedo that is bounce...I am not as much help.
