Power Mirrir Switches 900

Had a Right Rear window switch (the one in the front door switch pack) inop, so I changed the whole switch pack, and the window is fine.

BUT, the mirrors switches now only operate the mirrors UP and DOWN, i.e. I lost the LEFT/RIGHT adjustments. I thought that the mirror switches on that switch pack must be faulty so I put another whole switch pack and still, only UP/DOWN control, BTW when I operate the switches LEFT/RIGHT they still move the mirrors UP/DOWN only. Then I changed just the mirror switches, SAME RESULT! I now have only UP and DOWN, and I am pretty baffled...

Sounds like a wiring problem. have you traced the wiring to the mirror motor?

They get power just fine... They BOTH adjust UP and Down but NOT side to side. Both switches act the same--they move the mirrors up and down only, even when the switches are moved side to side.

I agree with Spook on the corrosion or connector issue. Remove the switch panel and simulate the switch action by applying G and +12V to the connector to see if the mirrors move.

        Dear tedv,

Hope you're well. A conclusion could be coincidental switch failure: both mirror switches on both switch units are not working.

I suspect corrosion on the wiring harness contacts, into which slide the mirror switch pins.

The corrosion layer may be only a few atom thick, and so invisible. Clean the contacts - on the switches and on the harness - with an aerosol corrosion-removed, e.g., DeoxIT.

If use of a corrosion-remover does not restore fully control of the mirrors, then I'd seek yet another master switch unit, preferably one tested and "known good".

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

          Thanks for the replies!

After some considerable switch swapping, both whole packs and just individual mirror switches, I finally opted to put back the original switch pack (after replacing the bad RR switch). Now ALL is WELL with the mirrors movements!

But I am not totally content because this exercise makes no sense--I always believed that all the switch packs on 740/940 were interchangeable which this experience seems to disprove. I have a box with switches, may be 10, that I have collected over the years and swapping them willy nilly is apparently not the way to go. But for the life of me I see no discernible differences... Oh, well!

            Dear tedv,

Hope you're well. The driver's door window/mirror switches are not entirely interchangeable. Some early switch units don't allow for power mirrors. The 1994 and 1995 switches have a built-in "light" (which is cosmetic in nature; such units will fit into earlier cars).

The balance of likelihoods is that the contacts on the two substitute switch units - and/or on the harness - were corroded or otherwise faulty. Witnesseth, when you put back the original unit - which worked, apart from a failed window switch - full mirror function was restored.

It is to avoid such situations, that I test used parts prior to need - i.e., when everything is in good order - and so mark a sound used part. When I install that "marked" used part, I can be pretty sure that it should work normally.

            Hope this helps.

            Yours faithfully,

            Spook
