Bad Idle 700 1990

My dads 1990 740 automatic has an idle problem. After coming off the highway or driving around town for a while, the idle will dip from 800 rpm to 600 momentarily, but comes right back up. In the last week, the interval has increased from once or twice a day, to once or twice an hour. Other than the rough idle the car runs very nice. Has anyone else had this symptom? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Is it a regina and what's the mileage?

"Is it a regina," has me scratching my chin. If your talking about a town in Canada that happens to rime with a female body part, then the answer no it is not Canadian eh. It's a straight 740 red sled wagon from California with 190K that has seen better days cosmetically, but drives nice.

        Regina FI system 700 1990

"Regina" is the name given to the FI system produced by Bendix-Seimens in France, and used on most US market non-turbo 700 series Volvos starting with the 1989 models. I said "most" because I'm not sure about California, thinking that your 1990 may be Bosch FI with EGR.

The Bendix-Seimens ignition used with Regina FI is known as Rex. The Rex-Regina B230F motors have the same performance specs as the Bosh versions. Why Volvo chose these alternative systems (also used on 940s thru 1994) is a mystery -- to me anyway.

My experience with a Rex-Regina '93 940 since 2003 finds it completely satisfactory. And comparable to Bosch in every way, as far as I can tell.

This has come up before Bruce, and it's interesting; I regularly visit local PnP's and have for the past 11 years. In that time I have seen at least 500 7/9 cars, and less than 10 have had Regina. As I once mentioned I did not know they existed til only a few years ago.
I have noted that almost all the highest mileage claims are from Regina cars. I don't know why; maybe the fuel map is better at cruising speeds. One guy has just reported 28 mpg highway with a Bosch turbo, hut he has a carefully tuned Megasquirt.

Could be a fuel pump. Mine went at about 170k. I believe after 150k you are on borrowed time. Fuel pump doesn't necessarily fail all at once. In mine, one of the springs which exerts pressure on the brush, was somewhat broken and it failed gradually.
