Out of nowhere, idling poorly, bucking under throttle?? 200

My 93 245 (with 160k miles) has been running the same (good) since I bought it in 2008. I've never had any trouble with it. The other night after a party I went to start it and it almost died. The idle would go low like it was about to die and then rev up. This repeated and eventually cleared up and I drove the car home. Almost like a vacuum leak somewhere, but not that I can tell.

To attempt to rectify this, I pulled the IAC motor and cleaned it with CRC contact cleaner internally to get any carbon out of there. I cleaned the MAF sensor. I installed new OEM bougicord plug wires, bosch rotor and cap, and bosch copper plugs. In fact, after doing this the car ran beautifully, smoother than ever.

So I drove to work and it went great. Then when I tried to go home at lunch the car didn't want to idle and in fact, the check engine light flashed once. I made it home OK but noticed that the car hesitates and recovers when you're giving it throttle in 2nd gear primarily.

So I started cleaning and applying dielectric grease to all of the electrical connectors I could think of. Fuel injectors, MAF sensor, IAC motor, TPS..

Should I be looking elsewhere? I pulled most of the vacuum lines and verified nothing was cracked. My primary fuel pump kinda buzzes/whines every now and again. I don't have a fuel pressure tester otherwise I'd check fuel pressure.

I'm going to attempt to find my Bentley manual and re-educate myself on pulling codes from the computer under the hood.

I'm just fishing for ideas on other things to check. I had about half a tank of gas and refilled with 91 octane at a different station thinking maybe something was wrong with my fuel. But it's still behaving the same way. ie: most people would continue to drive the car, but I know something is amiss.

Is there a way to test the TPS? It almost seems tied to throttle signal and/or fuel injection. But again I'm curious about the fuel pump itself...

Thanks for any thoughts!

Out of nowhere, idling poorly, bucking under throttle?? 200

My mass airflow sensor showed up in the mail yesterday. I pulled off the throttlebody because it was -filthy- inside. I cleaned it out completely. I pulled the battery cable to reset the computer and check engine light. Lo and behold, the car is running fine again. (not any better than previous to this incident, but like it should.)

So at the moment I believe this problem is solved.

A testament to how well the computer will adapt to its situation when things are less than ideal (dirty throttlebody, bad spark plugs, gap, wires, etc... and failing MAF sensor.)

    Time to motor on.

At lunch I measured voltage at pin #3 on the MAF.

    1.35v engine off
2.34v engine idling (badly at higher RPM than normal)

So, I'll be purchasing a new MAF and trying that next. I'll report back my results to complete the thread when it shows up.

Check for an air leak between the AMM (aka MAF sensor) and the throttle body. The flexible "accordion" ducting can develop hard-to-see splits so that intake air bypasses the AMM, totally confusing the system.

The fact that your tune-up efforts temporarily improved things suggests there is nothing wrong with the major electronic stuff.

The throttle position switch should emit a definite "click" as you barely open the throttle away from the fully closed position.

With the key on (position II) but the car not running, should I be able to hear a faint click from the TPS when I activate the throttle mechanism under the hood?

I will definitely check the MAF accordion hose tonight. I had removed the MAF from both tubes to clean it last week and perhaps exacerbated a problem, if one exists, in that flexy hose.

Remove and thoroughly clean the throttle body and make sure vacuum fittings are free flowing.

I pulled the flame trap out and cleaned the hardened rubber hose that ties it to the intake manifold. The flame trap was clear but the small rubber hose was restricted somewhat. I ran wire through it with brake cleaner to dissolve and remove crud.

The problem still exists, so I will probably disassemble the throttlebody and the flexy hose to the MAF tonight to inspect it further.

I'm am not 100% but this very similar to the problem I had with my 1989 240.
My problem began as yours is now - more intermittent and eventually became basically continuous. I checked everything I could - IAM , TPS , MAF , Crank sensor, wires etc...- all OK.
I read the codes and had a variety of different error codes.
Finally replaced the the injection computer - all has been good since.
Turned out to be a bad filter cap and related circuitry in the FI computer.
In my case I had the notorious computer with pink label. Replaced with a later version with the white label.
    But that was my scenario.

Last night I removed the passenger side kick panel. The ECU in my car is a white-sticker version ending in 951.

I ran diagnostics in socket #2 and the fuel injectors all clicked and the IAC motor activated repeatedly.

Diagnostics for DTC in socket #6 resulted in a 1-1-1 reading of 'no problems found.'

That said, I was purposely trying to confuse the car by working the throttle and you can see the results here:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42JkOkfm4bA

The engine did eventually die and the check engine light came on. It was at that point I found the code 1-1-3 in the socket #2 DTC test.
