New tranny - driveline sounds 120-130

Just swapped an m41 into my 122 wagon along with a short driveshaft from the parts pile, and trying to pinpoint a new noise that has appeared. I went through the tranny and cleaned/inspected everything and replaced all of the seals, the inside was very clean when I opened it up and everything looked to be in great shape. I checked the u joints on the driveshaft for slop, and the centre bearing seemed to spin freely on the shaft. In general, the new transmission shifts very well and the OD works beautifully, but there is a funny sound that wasn't there before. The sound is a rhythmic sort of scraping sound coming from the driveline, and only appears when coasting at 40mph plus or so, and only sometimes. It doesn't matter whether the car is in gear (any gear) with the clutch in, or in neutral with the clutch in or out, the noise remains unchanged. In other words, it appears when the driveline goes slack. As soon as I put power to the rear wheels or downshift to put some tension on things in the other direction it goes away instantly. It comes and goes depending on the day but usually once it starts it keeps going. Could this be the driveshaft bearing (I hope!) or could it be something in the transmission itself? Maybe the rear end?

One last thing, I did replace the transmission mount at the same time, and it seems like it's holding the tranny a bit higher than the old one as it's not compressed yet, could that be putting something out of alignment? Ideas?

When I put an M41 into a sedan a couple of years back I had an intermittent scraping sound that I couldn't locate immediately. Turned out that the mount/bracket tolerance was such that, either under load or when on uneven, bumpy road, the output flange would make contact with the mount. I think I added a thicker washer to shim it up.

There are two different brackets to hold the transmission mount onto the gearbox, and they are slightly different heights. Are you using the one that came off your M40 (which should be correct), or one that was on the M41 (which may not be)?

Ah - It's the one from the M41 - I checked them visually and they looked the same upon quick glance. The tranny is definitely a bit higher than before though, as the shifter (long one) bumps the heater controls when shifting into first, and it didn't before. I just assumed it was the taller (new, uncompressed) mount, could the wrong bracket/transmission angle cause funny stuff in the driveline? How are the 2 brackets different? M41 was from an 1800ES if that matters.

You didn't say if you used the same trans cover. I'll assume that you didn't drill a hole for the 4th gear lockout switch and used the cover on the M41. In that case, you may have enough slop in the cover where the shift lever rides which might account for more play in the stick (hitting the dash). Did you check the relative wear of the two covers? I'm always looking for (hoarding, I guess) covers with the least amount of wear in the slots.

The cover is the same one from the old M40 - actually in pretty decent shape. I did drill out and tap the lockout switch. I think there's something to the idea about the mount piece attached to the tranny - it did seem a bit high going in - I'll have to get under there tomorrow and take a look. Rigged the solenoid up to a spare fan switch and a nice green indicator lamp so it looks like it's all supposed to be there.

Definitely open to any other ideas as well - what does a failed centre bearing sound like? Does it complain all the time or just sometimes? What about rear end trouble? This sound is very consistent in when it appears - i.e. slack driveline, going 40mph plus, more frequently after the car is warmed up a bit. Even between gears at speed it grinds for just a split second as I push the clutch in to shift.

The tranny support member on the E/ES is different from the Amazon/1800S, and the bracket is a different height to compensate. Swap on the one from your M40 and I bet the trans will sit correctly.

Phil - swapped out the mount today - you were right of course, there is a subtle difference in where the holes are drilled in the mounts, they look very similar if you just compare them when mounted on the transmission - gearbox now sits lower in the right spot and the noise is gone. I don't know if I EVER would have figured that one out on my own. Thanks.
