Car jerking, turns off when idle 1995

I have a Volvo 95 850 non turbo GLT (wagon). It has about 242000 miles on it. Just in the past week it has been having problems with I think something to do with the fuel. While driving it every few minutes it will stutter(lose gas power for a second and then pick back up). This will cause the car to jolt a bit. Also if ideling, it will turn off every once in a while as if it is out of gas. However it has no problem starting back up. This is intermitent so it is happening more often but not all the time. Any advise or ideas of what the possible problems might be would be helpful. Let me know if there is any confusion or other information I could give.

Thank you

Andrew

You posted to all Volvo model forums.

Please choose your model/year from the model/year pop-down menu before posting.

Do you own a Volvo OEM, Bentley, or perhaps Haynes service manual?

Can you inspect engine bay on your car for causes?

Do you know to use a code scan tool to scan for fault codes set by the engine control systems? A trip to your local national chain auto parts store usually allows you access to borrow the parts store code scanner and scan and rest codes while your Volvo is in the parking lot.

Could be vacuum leaks, faulty engine control sensors, a faulty load on the engine, fouled throttle body, and a whole bunch of stuff.

Search the brick board archives for threads containing similar symptoms on your 850 models, options (turbo or not turbo, auto or manual tranny), and mileage, and region (salty winter roads in Buffalo, NY or rust free lived all it's life Volvo 850 in like New Mexico or something).

cheers,

dud.
