Inner tie rod ends 900 1993

I have a 1993 940 wagon that is showing wear on the tie rods. When I went to price replacements I was asked if the inner tie rod ends were the ZF of Cam type. How do I determine which type the car has equipped? I certainly want to get the correct ones for the car.

Hmmm, the tie rod ends should be of one type only, as far as I recall. The tie rods (sometimes called inner for some reason) will differ from ZF to Cam. So maybe you are pricing rods? Cam type will have the rubber boot taper to fit the rod (maybe 3/8 inch opening) on the outboard end. ZF type will not taper, but have a big flat rubber plug on the outboard side. Maybe 2 inch diameter. But this is all written up many time in Brick lore, and should be very easy to find from other sources.

Hey Bob,

I don't trust that outer boot end any more to distinguish between CAM and ZF racks. Only have one example, but I replaced a rack on a used '92 940 about 5 years ago that was wearing "CAM-like" boots. Actually I assumed it was a Koyo like on my '93, but found ZF embossed on the pinion housing after I got it off.

Of course I had ordered a Koyo rack, despite the advice from the nice lady at Jorgen's, that the '92 wouldn't have a Koyo. But I managed to get it installed by reversing the pressure and return line ends at the rack (not all that easy to do).

Art suggested maybe the ZF rebuilder use some kind of generic rod.

Many 93's have Koyo racks, which are different than CAM and ZF. There is a plate over the headlight with a code that tells which should be in the car.

Thanks Jerry, but my (obscure) point was that I found a ZF with the same type of boots as the CAM and Koyo, tight-to-the-rod outer ends with no plastic disk. So a quick eyeballing the outer end of the boot may not necessarily rule out a ZF rack if the boot is tight to the rod.
