In tank fuel pump return line fix 700 1991

My 91 740 turbo wagon has a weeping gas leak where the steel line enters the large round bung to the gastank. It is badly corroded between the 5/16" rubber hose and the tank screw cover.

To replace the corroded section can I just open the ring to the tank, pull the sending unit up enough to splice a new section of 5/16" steel gasline in place (keeping the same length)and replace the assembly?

Fuel pump works fine and I need this to pass a safety test to licence the vehicle.

any thoughts?

You can try that but consider that the steel cover top and pipe going through it might be seriously corroded too. Later cars use a plastic top to prevent this. Consider removing the entire sending unit, repairing any corrosion if possible, and replacing it. Or get a used sending unit from a Southern rust free car (see www.car-part.com) and use that. They are not all compatible so buy one for your car and year.

In tank fuel pump return line fix 700 1991

Hi Steve,

The round bung or plate my suction, return, fill, and vapour I guess is plastic.
The suction has a plastic nipple 1/2" with a flared end to hold the rubber line and a steel line running through the center 5/16" approx.

Steve where/how can I fire BB a paypal contribution?
cheers ian

At one time, Jarrod had a contribution link to help the site. I am not sure where it is now.
