1987 245dl, side pillar trim is BLACK, but chipped spots show bright chrome underneath. Same on the roof rack. I have thought of touching up black (what to use?) or removing all black and going to chrome, perhaps removing the roof rack (possibly using the IPD plugs)., either repainting, going back to chrome?, or plug and put in garage. Looking for a cheap, quick enhancement. Thoughts? Thanks.

It does not seem likely that Volvo would paint over chrome.

What is the other trim made of?

It is probably stainless steel, less likely aluminum.

Test it with a magnet - if it attracts, it might just be plain steel.

One source for the 245 under window trim decal is VP Autoparts in Sweden, but it is pricey. $53 per side, which includes three separate strips for the three individual windows. Anyway, an FYI.

New trim tape is available.Do a search on here and turbobricks. You can repaint the chipping paint with SEM trim paint.

Either SEM or WURTH Flat Black Trim paint in the aerosol can will do the best job. Remove all loose/flaking paint. Spot prime these areas and allow to dry for 48 hrs and then top coat with 2 light coats.

There are peel n stick vinyl tapes that can be applied but they are not a true flat black and will fade over time. Plus they look like shit.

I've been thinking this same thing lately, I'm tempted to go back to chrome but not sure how to remove all that paint relatively easily. Touching it up seems like the spots would stick out.

Also wondering about that black sticker about an inch and half wide that runs along the horizontal sheet metal beneath the windows. Mine is cracked and faded and doesn't seem to serve a purpose.

I touched up the black window frames with black permanent marker. It looks good from about 5 feet away and wears off after about six months. I think it would be more trouble than it's worth to "bring back" the chrome. I did get rid of the black shadow under the windows by using a plastic scraper and 3M adhesive remover. Just use a lot of care when scraping.
