Advice on installing rear speakers and 3 point belts in a 67 wagon 120-130

Despite all of the mouse traps laden with peanut butter that I set in, around and under the car and a few bottles filled with moth balls for good measure, a mouse got past my defenses and chewed a hole into my wagon's head liner and built a nest there where he, she or they spent a long winter, having no regard for proper toilet etiquette. The smell in the car was overwhelming when I took it out of storage last week, requiring me to slice it open to vac out the nest. The liner was ruined anyway.Off to three upholstery shops for estimates to replace the liner, new covers for the visors to match and a repair to a front seat panel, another victim of the rodent. Two estimates are back and I'm looking at $1,600 to $1,800 in repairs. The ruined liner had been about the best feature of the interior, it was new, bright and otherwise in perfect condition. The visors had been made of the same material and were very nicely done. My antique car insurance policy will cover this 100% as there are no deductibles.
The opportunity arises here to run some speaker wire overhead and hopefully connect to two speakers, one in each of the two rear side panels. Here's my plan, see if you think this will work.
Run the wires from under the dash, up behind the right, painted windshield frame trim, under the roof to the rear then down either side of the rear window, behind the painted trim there, to the side panels. From what I can see in the illustrations, there seems to be an opening in the structural sheet metal on either side that a speaker could fit into. Does that sound like a plan?
This is also a good time to fit rear shoulder belts. Does anyone have an idea of how long they should be? The wagon seems to have all the required mounting points in place already. A hole in the post behind the rear doors reveals the presence of a nut that is built into the post a 1/2"+-
behind the finished sheet metal. Others are located under the rear seat. It does not look as thought here will be room on the sides of the seat for a retracting mechanism. There is a place, upstate, called "Juliano's" that has a wide variety if aftermarket belts, it may be best to actually go there with the car to get a proper fit. Any thoughts on this?
If you made it this far thanks ahead of time for your help. hairy apple

Sorry to hear about your winter guests and their terrible manners.

My only concern is the amount of room in the D pillar for a good quality speaker. My 1998 R had a small speaker on each side, but it didn't make much difference unless I had the stereo in 'surround' mode. Even then, the small speakers couldn't hold much volume.

You are also going to put them on thick steel which will not revirberate much, if at all.

    The wiring sounds easy enough.

The rear 3 point is a problem. The 140/240/740 sedans had the same problem. You might want to look for a reel mount on the floor behind the seat.

I mean for the speakers to go into the flat panels on either side of the cargo area under the windows. In my case this is a carpeted panel over what I'll call the "inner" fender for lack of a better term. I am just wondering how big a space there is there for a speaker. I have some NOS JBL about 6x9 that I hope will fit. The mounts for the belts are there at all 3 points on both sides according to the upholstery guy, so I just need the right belts.

wouldn't it be easier to route new speaker wires with existing wire harness, down left side of car, under the door sill panels, up and over into well well area? Follow the taillight wires then branch off or extend.

Duly noted for the back up plan-no pun intended. I haven't decided where the radio ought to go. I don't want to cut out the dash to fit a modern unit, although it is the ideal place for one. If I could figure a way to set it on the trans tunnel w/o being in the way of the gear shifter that would be a choice. Just hanging it off the dash is a non starter for me. There has got to be a better way.

There is plenty of room for a 6x9 in the rear side panel but best to beef up the card and put some Dynamat or similar on the outer sheet metal. Acoustic foam as well if you know it's always dry in there. I found speaker wires in mine when I took the cards off and they came along the floor.

If you're goung to buy a modern "radio" you could get one with a remote control so you can tuck it away under the dash. I've a friend with a very nice Cobra kit car and he has his on a hinged bracket. Push up to release to select station/CD/ whatever and push up again to hide. It has a couple of catches like you get on cabinet doors. Very neat and you wouldn't know he had a radio fitted.

Seat belt reel on a wagon will fit neatly onto the wheel arch, tucked into the corner when the seat is in its normal position.

The late '68 and '69 wagons (home market) got rear belts. I have a set at home (NOT FOR SALE) and I can take some measurements off them. Send me an email directly and I can send photos.

Advice on installing rear speakers and 3 point belts in a 67 wagon 120-130

                Hello,

There are usually 4 mounting points for each standard 3 point retractable seat belt.

1 for the reel mechanism, 1 for the upper pivoting guide, 1 for the anchor end of the seat belt from the reel and a 4th for the latch.

I am pretty sure you only have 3 of the 4.

There is the a mounting point for the upper pivoting guide on the "C" pillar, a mounting point just behind the rear passenger door openings next to the rear bench seat for the anchor end and a mounting point for the latch under the rear seat.

IIRC, 1 of our customers had retractable rear seat belts installed in his 1966 122 wagon.

I think he had someone weld in mounting plates for the reels on each side behind the rear seat.

I found these mounting brackets that can be used to mount the reels.

                http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/wescoperformance_2192_1477783

Make sure the reel can point towards the upper pivoting guide before finalizing the mounting plate installation.

                Now to the speakers.

I suggest that you angle the speakers towards the front.

Pointing the speakers at each other will lower the sound quality.

You should be able to find surface mounting spacers that will angle the speakers.

Something like this available at Amazon.com

                http://www.amazon.com/Angled-Plastic-Speaker-Spacers-Vehicle/dp/B00574VBFM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1335156595&sr=8-3

You might want to glue on a backer panel behind each of your rear side panels to strengthen them to handle the weight of the speakers.

The angled mounts look like a good idea although the speakers will stick out a bit the added depth will allow me more flexibility as to where the speakers mount. I'm not quite sure I understand the where the missing attachment point should be located. I am not sure why there is
a fourth point in any case. Looking at the diagram on the Wesco Performance web site, the seat/shoulder belt combination seems to mount only at 3 points, in fact they are referred to as 3 point belts. Would you restate your advice in different words?

Three point belts refer to the human body contacts, not the car anchors. Right hip, left hip, and a shoulder. Four point belts cover the other shoulder, and 5 point harness includes crotch.

So, there is one anchor point for the latch, one for the outside hip on the floor, one above and to the rear of the shoulder, and one for the take up reel. Your problem is the take up reel mounting point, which should be in the floor behind the seat or directly below the pass through loop for the shoulder.

A front seat style belt system should work if you can mount the take up reel close to the C pillar. Of course, a 300lb+ person might want an extension :>)

                      Hello,

Klaus beat me to the response.

                      Did you need further clarification?
