Rebuilt Distributor Installation 200 1986

I finally managed to extract my old distributor from its mounting hole in the front of the block. I am replacing it with a rebuild from Cardone which is exactly like the old one right down to the Bosch number that ends in 004. However, I cannot get the new one to seat fully into the block. I was able to take the old distributor, make the 60 degree turn in the shaft from TDC marker and drop it back into the car, however, it got stuck again on the way out and I had to finesse it back out. I have installed a new timing belt and I check to insure that the car is at TDC by the crankshaft pulley marking and looking down the oil filler to insure that the cam lobes are off of the #1 cylinder. Nevertheless, the distributor refuses to seat into the hole. Does anyone have any ideas about how I obtain installation of the distributor? I am begining to believe that I have to remove the timing belt, and move the right side sprocket gear on the intermediate shaft to get the distributor to seat. Then I guess I'll have to get it back on the mark for TDC on #1 cyl and reinstall the timing belt? I would llke to avoid this however.

Line up the timing marks. Then drop the distributor in. Expect the rotor to turn as the distributor is inserted because it is engaging with the idler gear.

After insertion, if the notch on the distributor casing lip can't be lined up with the rotor (indicating TDC), pull the distributor and try again.

If the distributor itself is hard to insert, it may be that the o-ring on its body is a bit thick.

Thank you very much for your help. You were right it was the rubber washer on the distributor's shaft that was preventing it from being installed.

However, the car still won't start. What should I do? Pull the distributor and try again? Also should I have the car's crankshaft flywheel mark at the 0 degrees mark or just a little bit to the left of the 10 degree mark?

      Again, many thanks!

      Distributor R&R 200 1986

      That is 'removal and re-install'!

I just did the t belt on my 92 245, and this looks to be a good place to ask my question. :)

Can the distributor actually be pulled and re-positioned to get the mark on the distributor base to manually line up with the rotor, when the #1 piston is TDC ...AND the bolt stop is in place. I was thinking it had to be a set position down inside where it meshes with the gear.

      The rest of the story.
After my new belt was on ..and everything lined up just right (it REALLY did) ..the mark on the lip of the distributor base would not line up manually ..UNLESS I pulled the stop out.

Now I am thinking someone had the distributor out, and did not get it back in the same spot.

      Good thinking ??

      Thanks

Yes, the distributor can be lifted a bit, the rotor turned a tad, and then dropped back down. The rotor points at about 7 o'clock (facing car) for TDC if positioned right.

With the '89 and up 240s (CPS setup) the distributor is locked in one position (and the computer decides the timing). Whereas in pre-89 240s, the distributor can be rotated a bit before the hold-down bolt, in the slot, stops its movement.

          Distributor R&R 200 1986

I am a bit confused. Pardon my early morning fog. :)

To clarify. On a 92 245 ..can "the distributor .. be lifted a bit, the rotor turned a tad, and then dropped back down." ...thus changing the pointing of the rotor?

          Thanks for the response.

I just found out my own question ...went and tried to re-adjust to mark on distributor body.
You can adjust on a 92, but the adjustment carries the mark way too much off point.
