Rear Door Adjustment on a 940 wagon 900 1993

Hi,
I've got a '93 940 wagon. Rear doors are rubbing in the neighborhood of the curve. Doors have edge protectors which could be contributing to the problem. One door is making a lot of squeeking noises from this when I drive. It could be as simple as removing the edge guards- I haven't dug into this very far yet.

Any pointers on how to adjust them? Do I need to remove interior trim to gain access to the bolts or can it be done from the exterior?

I've looked around the site and couldn't find any info about this. If I missed something please point me to it.

Thanks!
Lyle

Update: Rear Door Adjustment on a 940 wagon 900 1993

Thought I would post the resolution of this. The door edge strips were rubbing paint off the door frame so I removed them and they appeared to be no longer in contact. Noise continued. Had someone drive while I crawled in the back, not the door, seemed to be coming from wheel well area. Pulled the wheel and found loose upper shock bolt. Must have forgotten to tighten it down beyond finger tight when I did the shocks. Gotta remember to double check everything!

    Rear Door Adjustment on a 940 wagon 900 1993

I adjusted the front doors on a 95 wagon, the rears should be similar.
On mine, I unbolted the hinge assembly from the frame(be sure to support the door)and added a combination of shims between the hinge and frame to get the correct alignment. Got the shims at the Auto Zone/Advance Auto/Napa. I'm sure someone has posted this procedure somewhere on the net..
As far as your seat foam is concerned, just be sure there are no squirrels in the attic!

    Rear Door Adjustment on a 940 wagon 900 1993

    Dear Irisius,

Hope you're well. The reason you didn't see information on door alignment/adjustment is that this almost always is done by a body shop.

Here's why: it is very hard to align a door, because: (a) the door is heavy and so hard to hold in one position; (b) it is hard to gauge - once one has loosened the bolts that secure the door to the frame - in what direction and by how much, to move the door, to align it.

I recently had to change the lower hinge on the driver's door. Using a bottle jack, and a piece of wood with a slot cut into it, so that the door would be well-supported, I was able to change the hinge and re-align the door. It is about 98-99% aligned. It closes tightly. But there is the slightest amount of "push-back" when the door is almost closed. At some point, I'll try again to get the alignment 100%.

In short, before loosening the door bolts, remove the edge protectors and see if they are the source of the "squeaks". If so, find another brand of edge protector, that fits properly. If not, then take the car to a body shop, and ask them to re-align the door. An experienced body shop tech will be able to do this in a few minutes.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
